Finance Professionals With Successful Startups - Business Insider

olga Videisheva shoptiquesIf you want to make a lot of money, you get a job on Wall Street.

If you want to make even more money, you might dump that Wall Street job for a startup.

It isn't a career path that works out for everyone. But for the founders of Wikipedia and Amazon, for example, ditching finance for tech was a smart choice.

The After Math: Moto X edition

Welcome to The After Math, where we attempt to summarize this week's tech news through numbers, decimal places and percentages.

The After Math Moto X edition

Motorola's got wood! Or at least that's what it said (and eventually unsaid) in conjunction with one of the most unique smartphone announcements we've ever seen. Not only is the Moto X almost literally one-of-a-kind, with its seemingly endless customization options and "assembled in the USA" status, but it's also not the hardware powerhouse you might expect from such a high-profile handset. Add to that Motorola's innuendo-laced marketing campaign and lack of a proper press conference to kick things off, and you've got yourself a healthy helping of digits for this week's After Math.

2013 Fantasy Football: WR PPR Rankings (1-10)

1. Calvin Johnson, Detroit Lions
Outlook: Many attribute Johnson?s 2012 campaign to his NFL-record 1,964 receiving yards, but from a PPR perspective, his 122 receptions were just as valuable. His projected receptions for ?13 do come in lower that last year?s, but he also scored only five touchdowns in ?12. That number will dramatically rise this season.

Projections: 99 receptions, 1,606 total yards (14 rushing), 11 touchdowns, & 1 fumble

2. Eric Decker, Denver Broncos
Outlook: Regarding Denver?s receivers, much of fantasy football?s focus is on Demaryius Thomas and Wes Welker. However, Decker will be the one to emerge as a bona fide fantasy stud in ?13. He caught 85 passes last season, including 29 over the final four regular-season games. His ability to find the end zone (21 touchdowns the last two years) and strong rapport with Peyton Manning is just icing on the cake.

Projections: 96 receptions, 1,276 receiving yards, & 12 touchdowns

3. Brandon Marshall, Chicago Bears
Outlook: Marshall has 100-plus receptions in nearly each season with Jay Cutler as his starting quarterback. The lone exception being ?06, when both were rookies and Marshall wasn?t a featured player in Denver?s offense.

Projections: 105 receptions, 1,370 total yards (10 rushing), 9 touchdowns, & 1 fumble

4. A.J. Green, Cincinnati Bengals
Outlook: One of Cincinnati?s major weaknesses is their inability to find a complimentary receiver opposite of Green. The AFC?s equivalency to Johnson?s importance in Detroit?s offense is Green in Cincinnati?s offense.

Projections: 106 receptions, 1,189 receiving yards, 11 touchdowns, & 2 fumbles

5. Victor Cruz, N.Y. Giants
Outlook: Those worrying about Cruz?s contract situation should breathe a sigh of relief, as in early July, he agreed to a long-term contract extension. With no distractions, Cruz is a good bet to lead the Giants in receiving.

Projections: 89 receptions, 1,395 total yards (2 rushing), 10 touchdowns, & 1 fumble

6. Roddy White, Atlanta Falcons
Outlook: While Julio Jones has an edge in standard leagues, White gets the nod under PPR rules. He has 90 or more catches in each of the last three seasons, including 115 in 2010 and 100 in 2011.Randall Cobb

Projections: 97 receptions, 1,345 receiving yards, & 8 touchdowns

7. Randall Cobb, Green Bay Packers
Outlook: Last season Cobb led Green Bay in receptions, despite not taking on a large role until an injury sidelined Greg Jennings. With Jennings now donning Viking colors, nothing will prevent Green Bay from making Cobb the featured skill player in their offense.

Projections: 86 receptions, 1,238 total yards (165 rushing), 10 touchdowns, & 1 fumble

8. Julio Jones, Atlanta Falcons
Outlook: Jones is a big-play receiver, but he finished behind White and Tony Gonzalez in receptions last season.

Projections: 73 receptions, 1,236 total yards (74 rushing), 12 touchdowns, & 1 fumble

9. Vincent Jackson, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Outlook: Jackson set career highs in receptions (72) and receiving yards (1,384) in 2012. He enters ?13 as one of fantasy?s lesser-known No. 1 receivers.

Projections: 74 receptions, 1,402 total yards (26 rushing), & 8 touchdowns

10. Dez Bryant, Dallas Cowboys
Outlook: The 2012 campaign was a breakout one for Bryant, who silenced critics with 1,382 yards and 12 touchdowns. He?ll only get better, as he finally realizes his full potential.

Projections: 74 receptions, 1,256 total yards (7 rushing), 11 touchdowns, & 2 fumbles

Scoring Key

DNP Google introduces the City Experts program to promote better local reviews

In an effort to raise the bar on local reviews, Google has just announced the launch of the City Experts program, open to Google+ users with at least 50 reviews under their belts. To maintain membership, City Experts must write a minimum of five reviews per month that meet Google's standards for quality. Said standards aren't particularly strenuous; City Experts are expected to produce three or four sentences that give an accurate and substantial impression of the businesses they're reviewing. To encourage people to sign up, the company is offering a slew of goodies, like custom Google swag, invitations to local events and exclusive offers in the program's monthly newsletter. If nothing tickles your fancy more than slamming or praising businesses in your area, you can sign up at the source link below.

Berlusconi finally falls. Could he take Italy's government with him?

The ex-premier's sentence for tax evasion - one of many in the past two decades - was upheld Thursday, putting Italy's ruling coalition at risk.

By Sara Miller Llana,?Staff writer / August 2, 2013

Italian media mogul Silvio Berlusconi in a television appearance broadcast last night comments on the Italian highest court sentence that affirmed his four-year sentence for tax fraud yesterday. The sentence for Mr. Berlusconi ? his first to be upheld through all appeals ? could upend Italy's government.

But when they woke up today, for the first time in history, Italians found he had been handed a sentence ? four years in prison ? that he cannot appeal.

It is symbolically dramatic for Mr. Berlusconi, who today called the decision unjust, but in reality it has more implications for the stability of Italy's coalition government.

Berlusconi's first definitive sentence ? his other trials, spanning sex with an underage prostitute to wiretapping, have been appealed or dropped after statues of limitation expired ? is a setback for the media tycoon, who until now had never been held accountable for crimes alleged against him. But it doesn?t mean he?s out of politics.

First of all, he will serve only one of the four years handed down because of efforts to reduce prison overcrowding, as Alberto Nardellli, the co-founder of electionista, a service that monitors politics globally, writes at CNN. Nor will the world see dramatic photos of Berlusconi behind bars: Because he is over 70, he?ll either serve his sentence at home or do community service.?

In addition to the sentencing, he faces a ban on public office, which the higher court ruled that a lower court must review. It?s unclear what will be decided, and whether he?ll have to step down from office now ? he is a serving senator ? or after the parliamentary term ends. But Berlusconi could still shape the politics of Italy, which he's done for 20 years, from the sidelines and step back in after the ban lapses.?

For Italy, the news is certainly a symbolic victory for those who have watched Berlusconi emerge unscathed from one scandal after another. Today, the BBC ran a statement from anti-establishment politician Beppe Grillo. He compared the sentence to the fall of the Berlin Wall, the BBC reports, saying Berlusconi "polluted, corrupted and paralyzed Italian politics for 21 years.??

But if some feel that justice has finally been served, the sentencing could put political stability at risk. The Italian Senate will have to take up the matter now, also voting on Berlusconi?s ineligibility to hold public office and when it would take place. ?And it promises to be an ugly fight, threatening the fragile left-right coalition formed by Enrico Letta. Markets sighed with relief when Mr. Letta stepped into the position of prime minister, after February elections led to a political standoff between the right and left.

Letta urged "a climate of serenity" for the good of the country, the BBC writes, while Italian President Giorgio Napolitano also called for calm. "The country needs to rediscover serenity and cohesion on vitally important institutional matters which have for too long seen it divided and unable to enact reforms," he said.

?We're in uncharted territory, and what happens next politically is nearly impossible to predict,? writes Mr. Nardellli. ?But the possible outcomes include the downfall of the government.?

Newsweek sold to IBT Media

By Gil Aegerter, Staff Writer, NBC News

Newsweek is being sold to an online news company, less than a year after it ended publication of its weekly print magazine and went all digital.

IBT Media, which publishes the International Business Times, said it was acquiring Newsweek from IAC, run by Barry Diller. Terms weren?t disclosed.

?"We believe IBT will serve as an excellent new home in which?Newsweek?has the opportunity to thrive," read a memo to employees from Rhonda Murphy, interim CEO of the Newsweek Daily Beast Company.?

Newsweek once had a circulation of 3 million but was in decline when it merged with The Daily Beast in 2010. It ceased print publication on Dec. 31. The deal with IAC is for the Newsweek brand and its online publication, IBT Media said in a statement.

?We respect the brand's long history of delivering high-quality, impactful journalism and believe this aligns well with IBT Media's culture and mission,? Etienne Uzac, co-founder and chief executive officer of IBT Media said in the statement.

IBT Media, which was founded in 2006, said it planned to continue the online publication as a wholly owned subsidiary of IBT Media.

IAC would continue to operate Newsweek for up to 60 days after the deal closes, IBT said. It said Newsweek would return to the URL http://www.newsweek.com.

2 Guns Review Roundup: Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg's Shoot-'em-Up Is a Hit-or-Miss With Critics

by Alexis L. Loinaz Today 6:49 AM PDT

Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg are out the gate with Guns blazing.

The stars' new movie, 2 Guns, has finally hit theaters?an action-packed shoot-'em-up about two undercover agents who, at first, don't know about the other's true identity but must eventually combine wits to infiltrate a drug cartel.

It's the first time the two actors have teamed up on screen. And judging by the early consensus, Hollywood appears to have found its next great buddy duo: Film critics are raving about the actors' chemistry and whiz-bang repartee.

The rest of the movie, directed by Icelandic filmmaker Baltasar Korm?kur, appears to be a mixed bag, though, with reviewers lamenting that, slick at it may seem, 2 Guns is simply shooting blanks. Here's the critical 411:

WATCH: American Hustle trailer?see Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Christian Bale and their crazy hair in action

? "Big bangs and fast talk are the name of the genre game in 2 Guns, a slick, slippery thriller that taps into the anarchic playfulness that made the best American action flicks of the 1980s and '90s pop," raves The New York Times, calling Washington and Wahlberg's team-up "one of the better odd couples to bond and bicker since Mel met Danny."

? "2 Guns, caught me completely off guard in all the right ways," reveals Entertainment Weekly's Owen Gleiberman, who notes that the two stars "cut loose and seem to be having a blast swapping below-the-belt insults as a pair of undercover agents posing as drug dealers."

? "The picture survives its excesses thanks to winning chemistry between stars Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, who animate banter-heavy dialogue and click so well, one wonders why they haven't shared the screen before," offers The Hollywood Reporter.

WATCH: George Clooney and Sandra Bullock got into orbit in Gravity trailer

? "The leads' banter, even the way they move around one another, creates a little ecosystem all its own," writes New York Magazine. "You never want to see them apart, and whenever they're separated, the movie loses energy...This is what some summer movies should be like?clever in a stupid way, and stupid in a clever way."

? The New York Post was less forgiving: "At first merely tangled, the plot gradually turns baroque in its silliness: This is the kind of movie that invites rude audience talkback, and gets it," the paper sniffs, labeling the film a "cheerfully ridiculous movie."

? "You believe the tired old B-movie plot might actually spring to life and relevance. No such luck," rants Rolling Stone. Nevertheless, the mag adds, "Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg are great company. You'd want to have a beer with them, trade war stories and laugh your ass off."

WATCH: Tom Hanks dives into Oscar race with Captain Phillips trailer

? "Thousands of rounds of ammo are spent in 2 Guns, a brutal, complicated and sporadically funny movie that still seems slight," offers USA Today.? "The ultra-complicated plot doesn't mask the fact that this is a cynical and derivative movie." Still, "the saving grace of the film is the chemistry between Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg," the paper opines.

? "The only thing simple and direct about 2 Guns is its title. This self-consciously nihilistic action movie is one slick piece of business as well as something of a double-edged sword," notes the Los Angeles Times. "Though individual set pieces are well done, the film inevitably leaves an empty taste behind it once it's done...Slickness can take you only so far."

? "2 Guns, with its hypercomplicated plot and semi-gritty, just-rolled-out-of-bed visuals, comes off as similar to 1,001 things we've already seen," rails The Village Voice. "The movie's pleasures, whatever they may be, stem from a kind of summer-diversion d?j? vu."

? "Big guns, cool cars, tough talk and hats rule the day in 2 Guns, a cliche-ridden action comedy starring Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington in which the chemistry between the two stars packs far more heat than the explosions," scoffs The Washington Post.

Canada draws up directive on beacons in 787 fire investigation

(Reuters) - Canada's air transport regulator is drawing up a safety directive concerning the emergency beacons at the center of an investigation into a fire on a parked Boeing 787 Dreamliner last month, it said on Saturday.

The directive - which would list action that airlines or manufacturers must take - will take into account inspections done by manufacturer Honeywell International and its Canadian sub-contractor Instrumar Ltd, Transport Canada said in a statement.

"Transport Canada is developing an airworthiness directive in consultation with the FAA (U.S. Federal Aviation Administration) and EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency)," the statement said.

"The airworthiness directive would be based on the information collected from the equipment inspections mandated by the FAA, information already provided by Honeywell, and the results of (Transport Canada's) inspections of Honeywell and Instrumar."

Emergency Locator Transmitters - designed to help locate an aircraft in the event of a crash - marketed by Honeywell have emerged as a key focus of the investigation into a blaze which caused serious damage to a parked 787 jet owned by Ethiopian Airlines at London's Heathrow airport on July 12.

The FAA has ordered inspections on the beacons in 787s, and Boeing last week expanded the inspections to cover more than 1,000 aircraft of all types that are fitted with the devices.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the Canadian directive would expand inspections to cover all types of planes that use the suspect emergency transmitters, including jets from Boeing, Europe's Airbus and Dassault Aviation.

Although the 787 is designed and manufactured in the United States, Transport Canada is the lead safety agency on the beacons, which are manufactured in Newfoundland.

An earlier model of Honeywell beacon faced scrutiny from Canada's regulator in a previous airworthiness directive in 2009.

It called for suspect parts to be modified or replaced after tests found that two units were unable to broadcast the emergency homing signal on the right frequency.

GOP prepares bill to cut food stamps by 5 percent

House Republicans are preparing legislation that would cut food stamps by as much as $4 billion annually in an effort to downsize a program that many conservatives say has become too bloated in recent years.

A group of Republicans led by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., has agreed to try to advance the legislation as early as next month. The measure would reduce the $80 billion-a-year food stamp program by as much as 5 percent. House conservatives have urged major cuts as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, has doubled in cost since 2008.

The bill is certain to face strong opposition from the Democratic Senate and President Barack Obama, who have opposed major cuts to the program. They say cuts could drop millions of Americans off the rolls when they are already struggling from the Great Recession.

Reps. Marlin Stutzman of Indiana and Kristi Noem of South Dakota, two Republicans who helped design the bill, said the legislation would find the savings by tightening eligibility standards and imposing new work requirements. It would also likely try to reduce the rolls by requiring drug testing and barring convicted murderers, rapists and pedophiles from receiving food stamps.

Many provisions in the proposed bill were included in farm legislation defeated on the House floor in June, though several were added by amendment. The original farm bill passed by the House Agriculture Committee would have cut food stamps by about $2 billion a year, but conservatives revolted against the bill even after adding additional savings through amendments, saying the cuts weren't high enough.

After the farm bill defeat, Republican leaders split the legislation in two and passed a bill in July that included only farm programs. They promised a food stamp bill to come later, with deeper cuts.

A spokesman for Cantor said the proposed bill will "build on those reforms already considered by the House."

"That will include common-sense measures, such as work requirements and job training requirements for able-bodied adults without children receiving assistance, that enjoy a broad range of support," said Doug Heye.

Much of the estimated savings could come from requiring such adults to seek work, a provision that wasn't in the original bill. The law already requires that they eventually work or receive work training to receive SNAP, but the 2009 stimulus law and waivers issued by the Agriculture Department since then have allowed states to set aside those work requirements.

The proposed bill hasn't been released and its exact cost isn't yet known, but the Republicans are estimating the cuts would be around $4 billion annually.

A farm bill passed by the Senate in June keeps the food and farm programs together and cuts food stamps by about $400 million a year, or about half a percent. Senate Agriculture Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., on Thursday accused House leaders of trying to block the farm bill by proposing something that the Senate would never accept.

"It's wasted time and effort, it's not going anywhere," she said. "It's not going to become law."

Current farm law expires at the end of September, and it's unlikely that both sides will agree on a final farm bill before then, even if the House is able to pass a food stamp bill. Food stamp dollars will continue to flow after the law expires but some farm programs would be in danger. Without an extension or a change in policy, for example, dairy subsidies would revert to decades-old law and cause milk prices to potentially double.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said he won't allow another extension after the law was continued once early this year to avert the dairy crisis. Stabenow said an extension would be difficult anyway because many members don't want to continue certain farm subsidies that would be eliminated under the House and Senate farm bills.

"This is a ticking time bomb here, waiting to go off," she said. "It makes no sense."

Minnesota Rep. Collin Peterson, the top Democrat on the House Agriculture Committee, said the proposed food stamp bill "effectively kills any hopes of passing a five-year farm bill this year."

House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas, R-Okla., hinted Thursday that the differences are so "huge and dramatic" between the Senate bill and what the House is proposing, that the White House may need to get involved, something the Obama administration has so far declined to do. The White House supported the Senate bill but had threatened a veto of the House bill.

"This may be one of those issues that may need some guidance from on high," Lucas said.

First, though, Republicans have to get the votes to pass the food stamp bill in the House. That could be difficult as Democrats are likely to be united in opposition and some moderate Republicans may not go along.

Stutzman said he thinks the issue will play well with their constituents when members return to their districts in August. The Republicans say they are trying to focus on the policies, not the number of dollars that would be cut.

"Most people will agree that if you are an able bodied adult without any kids you should find your way off food stamps," Stutzman said, referring to the proposed work requirements. "I don't think we will find much disagreement on this."

Noem agreed, saying that talking about policies and not just dollars "shows that you really care about adding integrity into the program."

Still, she said, making cuts to the program is a "huge culture change" not only for Democrats but also for some Republicans who have a lot of food stamp recipients in their districts.

"That's all a big pill to swallow for some of them," she said.

ROUND ROCK, Texas (AP) ? A special committee of Dell's board has agreed to an increased offer from founder Michael Dell that would add a special dividend for shareholders.

The struggling computer maker said Friday that a group led by its founder and investment firm Silver Lake Partners will tack a one-time shareholder payout of 13 cents per share to an offer they made last week to buy the company for $13.75 per share. The new offer also guarantees that the company's third-quarter dividend of 8 cents per share will be paid at or before the closing.

Dell Inc. stock jumped more than 5 percent, or 68 cents, to $13.64 in Friday morning trading after the company's announcement.

Shareholders had been scheduled to vote Friday morning on a lower offer to buy the company for $13.65 per share. The meeting was called to order and quickly adjourned without a vote, which had already been postponed twice. Shareholders who own the stock as of Aug. 13 will now be eligible to vote at a Sept. 12 special meeting on the new deal.

The latest offer also includes a requirement that only shares voted either for or against the offer determine its outcome. The Dell special committee had rejected this condition earlier this week, before the special dividend payment was added. Under the previous offer, shareholders who didn't vote would be counted against the bid, making it more difficult for Michael Dell's group to get the votes needed in support.

Dell's offers have drawn criticism from major Dell investors such as Carl Icahn for being too low. Icahn and the investment firm Southeastern Asset Management have pitched a complex alternative offer to gain control of the company.

Janet Kres, 65, was among about three dozen shareholders who turned out for the scheduled vote in a small room on the sprawling Dell campus in the Austin suburb of Round Rock. Word of the new agreement delighted Kres, an employee for Texas' state health department.

"We hope he makes it," Kres said. "We're rooting for Michael. Go, Michael! Win, Michael, win!"

Vince Dungan, another shareholder at the meeting, was less enthused. He said he began buying shares in 1998 and was now in line to take a $160,000 hit. Dungan wants Dell to get out of the PC business but believes the company would turn around under new management and a new board.

"What about the stockholders that have been invested in the company all these years? We're losing money. Lots of money," said Dungan, 66. "I've been holding it for 15 years. What's a few more years?"

Icahn sued Dell on Thursday to keep the PC maker from changing crucial details such as the record date of Michael Dell's previous offer.

The billionaire investor also contended that if the company is allowed to set a new record date for the meeting, it should hold a vote on the buyout at the same time as the annual meeting. Icahn wants to use the annual meeting to replace Dell's board and then oust Michael Dell, the chairman and CEO.

The investor said in a statement that he also wants a declaration that Dell's board breached its fiduciary duties to shareholders by, among other things, adjourning a July 24 special meeting without also scheduling the company's annual meeting. Icahn's complaint was filed in the Delaware Court of Chancery.

LeAnn Rimes Talks Rocky Relationship With the Media, Standing Up for Herself on Twitter

by Natalie Finn Fri., Aug. 2, 2013 4:32 PM PDT

LeAnn Rimes is no stranger to judgment. So, she's come to the right place!

"You know, they can take it down one road or another," the singer explains to Joan Rivers & Co. on the latest episode of Fashion Police, airing tonight at 10 p.m. on E!, when Joan tells her that she thinks the press has treated her "abominably."

"You got together with a married man, blah blah blah...so did Angelina Jolie! And she's become a [bleeping] goddess," marvels Joan.

PHOTOS: LeAnn Rimes' many bikini looks

Smiling, LeAnn agrees that the media hasn't given her any free passes since she and now-hubby Eddie Cibrian got together, divorcing their respective spouses in the process.

"They can take it down a negative road," she says. "If they want you to be happy and they love you, they'll take it down that road! So it's amazing how much control they have over people's lives and the perception, you know...It's just been quite an interesting four-and-a-half years."

Joan also wonders, fabulously bluntly, why LeAnn bothers to engage with people on Twitter. Or, more specifically, why Leann picks fights via Twitter?

"I don't pick fights!" LeAnn insists. "I do stand up for myself every once in a while. But can you imagine the stuff that I just let go?"

Watch LeAnn talk life and style with Joan, Giuliana, Kelly and George on Fashion Police, tonight at 10 p.m., only on E!

Stocks close on highs as markets await crucial jobs figures

stocks

Stocks soared to fresh closing highs on Thursday, one day before the government releases critical jobs figures that could help determine whether the economy is healthy enough for the Federal Reserve to begin to slow down its stimulus package.

The rally, in which the S&P 500 went through the 1,700-point level for the first time, was sparked by a plethora of upbeat economic data ahead of the widely-watched jobs report set for Friday morning.

Analysts polled by Reuters expect to see a gain of 184,000 jobs in July, after a 195,000 uptick in the previous month.?

(Read more:?July jobs report key to Fed action)

"The jobs numbers have been decent as of late, but the problem is the quality of employment," said Lance Roberts, chief economist at StreetTalk Advisors. "There's also clearly a divergence between the stock market and real economy and that's because of the artificial stimulus from the Fed.

"The problem is that they're not seeing that stimulus being translated into the economy so the worry we should have is that we're inflating valuations and the issue of potentially blowing an asset bubble is very real."

On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve?declined to signal when it would start tapering its bond-buying program, which has buoyed the markets. However, it did raise concerns about rising mortgage rates and flagged the risks of inflation falling too far below its target. In addition, the central bank slightly downgraded its outlook for economic growth.

But several reports on Thursday boosted the views of many analysts that the economy is getting healthier. Weekly jobless claims?dropped to a 5-1/2 year low, according to the Labor Department. And the number of planned layoffs at U.S. firms?declined modestly in July, with employers announcing 37,701 cuts last month, down 4.2 percent from June, according to the report from consultants Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

In another positive sign, the pace of growth in the U.S. manufacturing sector accelerated in July to the?highest level since June 2011 as new orders surged, according to the Institute for Supply Management.?

The positive economic data have stimulated the stock markets recently. Major stock averages closed out their?best July since 2010 on Wednesday and so far this year, the Dow and S&P 500 have spiked more than 19 percent, while the Nasdaq has surged an impressive 21 percent.

On Thursday, the?Dow Jones Industrial Average spiked to close 128 points higher and set a fresh all-time high of 15,650.69, lifted by Bank of America and P&G. ExxonMobil was among the few Dow components in the red.

The?S&P 500 and the?Nasdaq both put on 1 percent, with the S&P 500 piercing the 1700 barrier to close at 1706.87. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, slid below 13.

All key S&P sectors closed in positive territory, led by financials and industrials.

"The rising asset prices will help instill confidence and that will breed more confidence," said Matthew Kaufler, portfolio manager of the Clover Value Fund at Federated.?

"However, we've had a great run in the market and at some point there will be a correction in the near point?still, my sense would be that there's enough momentum that we'll end the year up a few percentage points higher than where we currently are."

Asian stocks rallied after China's official PMI (purchasing manager's index) data showed the country's manufacturing sector continued to expand in July, defying forecasts of a contraction. But the picture was mixed, with a private gauge of factory activity by HSBC showing an 11-month low of 47.7 in July. Japan's Nikkei rallied to a one-month peak on the news, the Shanghai Composite hit a one-week high and South Korea's Kospi touched a seven-week high.

"Official PMI is more skewed to larger companies, and the HSBC figure reflects the smaller companies and that is where you get this divergence," said Frederic Neumann, co-head of Asian economics research at HSBC.

In Europe, the European Central Bank kept its main interest rate unchanged at a record low of 0.5 percent, and reiterated that rates would remain at present or lower levels for an extended period of time.

"Labor market conditions remain weak. Looking ahead to the remainder of the year and 2014, euro area growth should benefit from a gradual recovery in global demand," said ECB president Mario Draghi in a press conference following the announcement. "Our monetary policy stance remains accommodative for as long as necessary. We have unanimously confirmed the forward guidance we gave last time."

Euro zone manufacturing activity grew for the first time in two years in July, with the purchasing manager's index (PMI) climbing to 50.3 in July. A reading above 50 indicates an expansion.

And the Bank of England left its interest rates unchanged at 0.5 percent, as expected, under its new governor, Mark Carney.

This Helmet Gives Eurofighters X-Ray Vision

In conventional combat aircraft, the target generally needs to be in both the pilot's field of vision and within the sights of the plane itself. That is, the plane needed to be pointed in the general direction of whatever you're shooting at. But in the case of the new Eurofighter Typhoon, pilots can squeeze off a few Sidewinders at bogies incoming from any direction thanks to a super helmet that links their eyes to the plane's electronic brain.

Daily iPhone App: Pivvot mixes music and mayhem

I really have a thing for simple games. And I'm not using the word "simple" as a replacement for "easy." I just mean that if a game can teach me how to play it without having to explicitly explain how, I'm much more likely to enjoy my first experience with it. Pivvot is that kind of a game.

Part puzzle game and part rhythm game, Pivvot teaches you everything you need to know about it within the first 45 seconds of playing. You control a floating orb that is tethered to a long track. Your only input comes in the form of swinging your orb in one direction or the other in order to avoid various obstacles.

These obstacles are sometimes attached to one side of the track, prompting you to swing in the opposite direction, or spread across both sides with one side being impassable and the other being a tight, but necessary squeeze. If your orb touches one of these objects, it disintegrates in a multicolored explosion and you'll have to try it again.

There are two main modes of play, a checkpoint-based run where your progress is saved, or a more intense ride where the speed of the course ramps up quickly and a single failure sends you back to the very start. Regardless of which you choose, it's no cakewalk, and the "Expert" variations of both of these modes make things considerably harder. There's also a truly sadistic "Berserk" mode that throws a ton of obstacles at you at high speeds.

This core gameplay is satisfying in its own right, but what really makes Pivvot worth playing is its soundtrack. The techno tracks match the minimalistic art style perfectly and many of the obstacles twist or sway along with the beat, adding an additional layer of complexity. Playing the game with headphones is an absolute treat.

Pivvot makes it a point to say that the game features no in-app purchases whatsoever, which I can appreciate. However, the game does cost US$2.99 upfront, so it's a bit of a tradeoff. Still, the game is undoubtedly worth its asking price and if you're looking for an arcade-style thrill that is instantly accessible, Pivvot is for you.

U.S. House passes Iran sanctions bill to slash oil exports

By Timothy Gardner

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The House of Representatives easily passed a bill on Wednesday to tighten sanctions on Iran, showing a strong message to Tehran over its disputed nuclear program days before President-elect Hassan Rouhani is sworn in.

The vote also highlighted a growing divide between Congress and the Obama administration on Iran policy ahead of international talks on the nuclear program in coming months. Iran insists the nuclear program is purely for civilian purposes.

The bill, which passed 400 to 20, would cut Iran's oil exports by another 1 million barrels per day over a year to near zero, in an attempt to reduce the flow of funds to the nuclear program. It is the first sanctions bill to put a number on exactly how much Iran's oil exports would be cut.

The legislation provides for heavy penalties for buyers who do not find alternative supplies, limits Iran's access to funds in overseas accounts and penalizes countries trading with Iran in other industrial sectors.

Existing U.S. and EU measures have already reduced Iran's oil exports by more than half from pre-sanction levels of about 2.2 million barrels per day (bpd), costing Tehran billions of dollars in lost revenue a month.

Most of the OPEC member's exports head to Asia, where the United States has worked with Iran's top four customers China, India, Japan and South Korea to push them towards alternative suppliers. The four have cut purchases from Iran by more than a fifth in the first half of this year, over and above the reductions made last year.

Oil prices have remained relatively steady, which has allowed the efforts to continue, but some analysts say further sanctions risk pushing up prices and damaging the economies of U.S. allies.

"This is almost like an embargo on Iranian oil imports. It is like giving Iran an ultimatum," a Seoul-based refining source said, after the vote. "I think we can find alternatives but we prefer Iranian crude as the economics are better. If very little Iranian crude is available, overall oil prices would rise."

The bill still has to be passed in the Senate and signed by President Barack Obama before becoming law. The Senate Banking Committee is expected to introduce a similar measure in September, though it is uncertain whether the language to cut exports by 1 million barrels a day will survive.

Critics of the bill said it shows an aggressive signal to Iran that last month voted in Rouhani, a cleric many see as more moderate. He will be sworn in on Sunday.

NO HIGHER PRIORITY

Rep. Ed Royce, a California Republican and Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee who introduced the bill with Rep. Eliot Engel, a New York Democrat, said the United States has no higher national security priority than preventing a nuclear-armed Iran.

Royce said the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's drive to develop a nuclear arsenal was evident. "New president or not, I am convinced that Iran's Supreme Leader intends to continue on this path," he said.

The vote showed a growing disagreement between the White House and Congress on Iran policy. A senior administration official said on Wednesday the White House is not opposed to new sanctions in principle, but wants to give Rouhani a chance.

The Treasury Department last week partially eased sanctions on Iran by expanding a list of medical devices that can be exported there without special permission.

One of the 20 lawmakers to vote against the bill, Jim McDermott, a Washington-state Democrat, said shortly before the vote that the rush to sanction Iran before Rouhani takes office could hurt efforts to deflate the nuclear issue.

"It's a dangerous sign to send and it limits our ability to find a diplomatic solution to nuclear arms in Iran," McDermott said.

A supporter of harsher sanctions disagreed.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei "doesn't see our flexibility and good faith efforts as a sign of good intentions, he sees it as a sign of weakness," said Mark Dubowitz, the head of Foundation of Defense of Democracies, an advocate of sanctions.

"If anything, it's only going to be massively intensified sanctions that get him to blink."

But Trita Parsi, the president of the National Iranian American council, said the House action undermines the U.S. strategy which has long been one of good cop - bad cop.

The White House has taken a softer stance toward Iran's nuclear program and Congress has taken a tougher one. But now there are signs that the good cop cannot control the bad cop, he said.

"The impression on the Iranian side is not that it's good cop bad cop, but complete chaos and mayhem," Parsi said.

'TOO MUCH'

The bill also further denies Iran's government access to foreign currency reserves, and targets Iranian efforts to circumvent international sanctions against its shipping business.

"I think it's too much. Asian countries don't have much oil resources and they need to import a lot from the Middle East," said a trader with a North Asian buyer of Iranian crude. "If the United States keeps pushing further, it would be a big burden for Asian refineries."

While the bill has more steps to clear before becoming law, Asian buyers have already begun voicing their inability to reduce dependence on Iranian oil much further.

"Cuts in our imports from Iran have been the maximum as compared to other Asian countries," an Indian industry executive said. "At this moment there is no scope for further reduction."

India cut its Iranian oil imports by 43 percent over the first half of the year. That's more than the 27 percent cut by South Korea, 22.5 percent by Japan and about 2 percent by China.

'Simpsons' supercut packs major movie nods

Pop culture

Every fan of "The Simpsons" knows the show is rife with pop culture references, some more overt than others. But over its 25 seasons on the air, just how many of those references have been snagged from movies?

Many. Many more than you might even think. In fact, as film website Next Movie discovered, nearly 40 minutes worth of references ? in just the first 10 seasons.

Woo hoo!

So for those who may not have ever caught "First Blood" or "The Gay Divorcee" or even "Casablanca," here's a supercut (or, since they're 20 minutes each, maybe these are more of a super-duper cut) of every reference the show made in those early years, along with the relevant film name at the bottom of the screen.

Tip: Don't scroll down all of the way. Keep those movie titles hidden when you hit "play," and then try to guess as you go along. Good luck!
