Economic trend lines, for now, favoring Obama

(AP) ? For the past year, as the presidential election unfolded, President Barack Obama confronted a dizzying swell of economic news ? hiring up, hiring down, a euro crisis abroad, seesawing gasoline prices at the pump, foreclosures dragging down home values.

Six weeks before the election, those highs and lows are merging into a straighter line which, while below optimum performance, is moving in a positive direction for the country and for the president in his contest with Republican rival Mitt Romney.

Consumer confidence is at its highest level since February. Home values are up and, more important in the election season, housing prices in 20 major cities, many of them in battleground states, rose in July. Despite recent declines, the stock market has been on an upswing, adding value to Americans' 401(k) retirement plans.

Improving consumer confidence is certainly a positive sign for Obama, who has faced a slow economic recovery and a stubbornly high unemployment rate that has remained above 8 percent since virtually the start of his presidency. The consumer confidence index, as measured by The Conference Board, jumped from 61.3 for August to 70.3 for September, though it remains well below 90, the level that is thought to signify a healthy economy.

The numbers track with recent public opinion polls showing that while a majority of Americans say the country is heading in the wrong direction, an increasing number say the country is on the right path. The rising optimism also coincides with polls showing Obama opening leads in some crucial swing states, including all-important Ohio.

If Obama's advantage holds through Election Day, September may be remembered as a pivotal month when political and economic attitudes began to gel.

A weak recovery still makes the economy vulnerable, and public opinion can still change during the critical month of October. Three debates next month between Obama and Romney have the potential of shaking up the race. And the stock market showed its fickleness Tuesday with its worst sell-off since June after a Federal Reserve official cast doubt on the effectiveness of the central bank's recent economy-boosting measures.

But with early voting already under way in some states and with a shrinking number of persuadable voters, Obama aides see a favorable political landscape despite Romney's focus on sluggish growth.

Obama advisers have long argued that despite the economy's weak performance, Obama's re-election hopes rested on a positive trend line. Indeed, Obama has been running an ad since the Democratic convention earlier this month that points to private sector job growth even as it acknowledges "we're not there yet."

"The economy is perceived in relative rather than absolute terms," said St. Louis University political scientist and pollster Ken Warren.

Romney aides argue that their bottom-line argument ? that the country cannot afford another four years of Obama ? remains a winning message that can still resonate with undecided voters.

While the confidence accrues to the president's benefit, consumer attitudes are more a reflection of their economic perceptions than they are of presidential approval. What's more, studies of the relationship between politics and consumer confidence show that falling confidence hurts a president's approval rating more than rising confidence helps.

If the president can benefit, pollsters say Democrats and Republicans seeking re-election in tough contests might also profit from improving economic indicators.

"It would help all incumbents because people are less angry," Warren said.

The rise in confidence comes as the Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller index showed that national home prices rose 1.2 percent in July compared with a year ago, increasing home equity and, by extension, the perception of personal wealth.

"People pick up on that very quickly," said Rob Shapiro, an economist and former adviser to President Bill Clinton. "They're no longer getting poor every month. So people think, 'OK, we are on a better path, even if we're proceeding on it a lot more slowly than I expected or hoped.'"

Significantly, prices are rising in many large cities in swing states such as Florida, Colorado, Michigan and North Carolina. Prices have risen 3.6 percent in Tampa, Fla., in the past year, for example. And they're up 5.4 percent in Denver, 6.2 percent in Detroit and 2.2 percent in Charlotte, N.C.

Still, Obama is bucking trends. Unemployment stands at 8.1 percent, and no president has been re-elected with unemployment above 8 percent since the Great Depression. Despite improving public attitudes, an Associated Press-GfK poll this month found 52 percent of likely voters said the country was moving in the wrong direction.

"Going from absolutely horrible to really, really bad is not exactly an endorsement of an incumbent president's record," Republican pollster Whit Ayres said. "We're a long way from measures that show the American people have confidence in the direction of the economy."

Shapiro concedes that the politics are confounding. A Washington Post poll out Tuesday showed Obama leading Romney among likely voters in Ohio, 52 to 44 percent. The president also had a slight edge in Florida, 51 to 47 percent among those most likely to vote.

"We have a president who is leading in a very convincing way despite economic numbers that suggest that he should either be losing or just hanging on, and he's not just hanging on," Shapiro said.

You never know? even on another planet it can?t hurt to have friends in high places!
?
The image was captured by MAHLI on September 19, the 44th sol of the MSL mission. (See the original raw downlink?here.)

The rectangular plaque is made of anodized aluminum, measuring 3.94 inches (100 mm) high by 3.23 inches (82 mm) wide. It?s?attached to the front left side of Curiosity?s deck with four bolts. (Explore Curiosity in 3D?here.)

Dust, pebbles and variously-sized bits of Mars can be seen scattered around the plaque and deck, leftover detritus from the rover?s landing.

The complete list of signatures is:

Barack Obama, President, United States of America

Joe Biden, Vice President

John P. Holdren, Director, Office of Science and Technology Policy

Charles F. Bolden, Jr., Administrator, National Aeronautics and Space Administration

Edward J. Weiler, Associate Administrator, Science Mission Directorate (2008?2011)

James Green, Director, Planetary Sciences Division

Doug McCuistion, Director, Mars Exploration Program

Michael Meyer, Program Scientist, Mars Exploration Program

David Lavery, Program Executive, Mars Science Laboratory

In another image taken on the same sol, Curiosity shows some national pride with a circular medallion decorated with the stars and stripes of the American flag. The 68-mm-wide circular aluminum plate is affixed to one of the rover?s?rocker arms. It?s just?one of its four ?mobility logos? ? the others having the NASA logo, the JPL logo and the Curiosity mission logo.

The main purpose of Curiosity?s MAHLI camera is to acquire close-up, high-resolution views of rocks and soil at the rover?s Gale Crater field site. Developed for NASA by?Malin Space Science Systems?in San Diego, CA, the camera is capable of focusing on any target at distances of about 0.8 inch (2.1 centimeters) to infinity, providing versatility for other uses, such as views of the rover itself from different angles.

The Other U.N. Meeting: ITU Chief Again Rebuffs Internet Takeover ...

NEW YORK ? If they weren?t before, the members of the United Nations should now all be aware of the powerful real world implications of free speech on the Internet.

As President Obama said in his remarks to the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday, referencing the notorious anti-Muslim film ?Innocence of Muslims?: ?Americans have fought and died around the globe to protect the right of all people to express their views - even views that we disagree with.?

But across town on Monday and earlier over the weekend, another world leader was attempting to toe a fine line between Internet security, increased development and freedom of expression.

Hamadoun Tour?, Secretary General of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the global telecom standard-setting agency that actually predates the U.N. (founded in 1865 to coordinate global interoperability of the telegraph), spoke on Monday at Columbia University about an upcoming conference in which representatives from the 193 nations that make up the U.N. will get together to revamp international communications regulations for the Internet era.

That conference, the World Conference on International Telecommunications 2012 (WCIT-12), is the first time that the nations are rewriting international rules for telecommunications since 1988, before the rise of the commercial Internet.

But the conference, which is to take place in Dubai from December 3 through 14, has also drawn suspicion and criticism from U.S. lawmakers and advocacy groups who believe that proposals for rewriting the regulations submitted by more centrally-governed nations including Russia, China, Iran and other Arabic countries, indicate that these nations want to use the opportunity to codify measures that would enable them to police Internet content, meter Internet traffic at international borders, and essentially attain U.N. blessing to crack down on dissenting voices.

Tour? and the ITU have repeatedly rebuffed these notions, but apparently not enough: Tour??s speech Monday was titled ?Myths and Reality,? and he used it to try and articulate what he thought were the benign, yet important, matters at stake at the WCIT-12 conference.

?The conference has attracted an enormous amount of interest and media coverage - especially here in the United States, but not always for the right reasons,? Tour? said in his speech, later adding:

Let us focus on what WCIT is really about.

It is about accelerating the rapid deployment of broadband to ensure that many more of the unconnected are given a voice online and that the transformative power of broadband is accessible to all the world?s people.

This is very much in line with ITU?s day-to-day activities which are already fundamental to promoting Internet growth.

Tour? also said that the conference was about, ?the free flow of information? and ?continuing to promote a harmonious and conducive international environment that drives innovation? and ?accelerating the rapid deployment of broadband to ensure that many more of the unconnected are given a voice online.?

However, Tour? also repeated his assertion that the WCIT-12 conference and the ITU?s daily activities also involved ?security standards, including standards to combat spam.?

It?s precisely codifying regulations and international agreements to fight spam and other network disruptions in the context of cybersecurity that worry some U.S. lawmakers and freedom of information advocates, including Eli Dourado, a research fellow at the George Mason University Mercatus Center and co-founder of WCITLeaks.org, a website critical of the ITU that publishes leaked regulations proposals.

Dourado earlier this summer wrote on the blog Tech Liberation that an international agreement on fighting spam ?would create an international legal excuse for governments to inspect our emails.?

?We need to remember that any security standards that are included in the ITRs [international telecommunications regulations], with whatever intentions, will be used by some member states for their own purposes,? Dourado tweeted to TPM on Tuesday. ?This might include censorship or political repression.?

The ITU has also repeatedly pointed out that its role is only to facilitate international discussion about telecommunications standards and development, not to make any decisions, which the member nations must agree to by broad consensus.

At the same time, the ITU is openly working to spur the growth of broadband Internet connections around the globe, particularly in developing nations.

On Sunday at the Yale Club in New York, Tour? attended and presided over a meeting of the ITU?s Broadband Commission, a collaboration with UNESCO established in May 2010 to help meet some of the telecommunications connectivity levels for developing nations set in the U.N.?s Millennium Development Goals.

The meeting saw the release of the first-ever ?State of Broadband? report, which collects and summarizes broadband installation rates on a country-by-country basis around the globe for the year of 2011. The report found that fixed internet subscriptions totalled 589 million in 2011 and that out of 5.97 billion mobile subscriptions, 18.3 percent were mobile broadband, but that mobile broadband subscriptions are growing by a rate of 60 percent year-over-year.

The report goes on to lay out specific ?advocacy targets,? including ?making broadband policy universal ? by 2015 all countries should have a national broad plan or strategy,? and ?making broadband affordable,? by having developing countries pass laws or policies to ensure entry-level access to broadband amounts to less than 5 percent of household?s monthly income.

Overall, the ITU?s Broadband Commission wants to see 60 percent of the world?s people online by 2015, with at least 50 percent access to developing nations and 15 percent to the least-developed.

The report didn?t touch on security, but when asked by TPM about the ITU?s role in ensuring networks are secure while simultaneously open to dissenting voices, Tour? responded in part with the following statements:

?This is a fundamental issue,? Tour? said, ?We?re trying to address it globally, because its a global problem and you can only have global solutions? In security matters, you have also unfortunately some wide differences in terms of even definitions of security?you have differences in definitions of freedom across countries; cultural or religious differences that make those understandings different. To be frank with you, in order to avoid entering into a long debate on those issues where its clearly not working, my job was to try find one area where we agree. This is why we launched the Child?s Online Protection initiative. Children, everyone agrees on that.?

The Child?s Online Protection initiative (COP) was launched by the ITU in 2008, and aims to coordinate best industry and policy practices when it comes to keeping kids safe online, while still encouraging access.

When Paul Steiner published his 1993 cartoon in the New Yorker with the caption, "On the Internet, no one knows you're a dog," little did he know it would become a mantra among security professionals, especially those concerned about authenticating identities on the Net. The job of finding ways to identify dogs in cyberspace has been assigned to the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace, better known as NSTIC.

US tilt to Asia not aimed against China: Panetta

US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta sought to reassure Beijing on Wednesday over Washington's strategic tilt to the Pacific, telling a military audience it was not an attempt to curb Chinese power.

President Barack Obama, concerned about China's growing military and economic might, has called for a shift in focus to the Asia-Pacific region, with the US Navy planning to station most of its ships in the area.

But China has questioned whether the American military's "pivot" to Asia is really about countering Beijing.

"Our rebalance to the Asia-Pacific region is not an attempt to contain China. It is an attempt to engage China and expand its role in the Pacific," Panetta said in the Chinese capital.

"It's about creating a new model in the relationship of our two Pacific powers," he told cadets at an armoured force engineering academy.

As the world's two largest economies, China and the US must forge stronger ties between their armies to avoid potential crises, Panetta said.

"Our goal is to make sure that no dispute or misunderstanding escalates into unwanted tensions or a conflict," Panetta said.

His remarks represent the latest effort by Washington to bolster military relations with the People's Liberation Army, which has displayed reluctance to promote contacts with the American top brass.

The Pentagon chief also found himself in the middle of Chinese domestic politics, becoming the first foreign dignitary to meet Vice President Xi Jinping, the country's leader-in-waiting, since he re-emerged from a two week absence from public view.

Xi appeared "very healthy and very engaged," extending a scheduled 45-meeting to more than an hour, Panetta told reporters.

Xi looked relaxed as he greeted Panetta in the Great Hall of the People, despite a wave of rumours about the vice president's health and political career during the fortnight-long hiatus.

Panetta's three-day visit to Beijing -- his first as Pentagon chief -- coincides with mounting tensions between China and Japan over disputed islands in the East China Sea, with a wave of anti-Japan demonstrations across China on Tuesday.

Panetta appealed for calm on both sides and described US policy as based on "basic principles" including free commerce, the rule of law, open access to sea, air, space, and cyberspace, and resolving disputes "peacefully without coercion or the use of force".

In his speech to young military officers, Panetta stressed the importance of international norms and rules to ensure stability in the Pacific, a clear reference to a spate of territorial disputes that often pit the economic powerhouse China against smaller countries.

International law, backed up by US naval power, had helped bring prosperity and peace to the region and China had profited from it, he argued.

"Many countries -- and many millions of people in the region -- have benefited from this rules-based order, and that includes China," he said.

China and the United States have disagreed about navigation rights in the western Pacific, with Beijing taking an assertive stance on claims to the South China Sea and the East China Sea.

Panetta, who had lunch with the Chinese cadets in a military canteen, said he was hopeful the feud over the archipelago in the East China Sea would be settled peacefully after his talks this week in Tokyo and Beijing.

"I am confident after my discussions with both Japanese leadership and Chinese leaders that both are concerned with finding ways to to able to resolve these issues," he told the cadets in a question and answer session after his speech.

Panetta also tried to reassure China over the deployment of a second powerful US radar to Japan for its missile defence system, saying it was aimed at the threat posed by North Korea's ballistic missile arsenal and not at China.

In two days of talks, Panetta said the Chinese signalled a readiness for a dialogue on cyber weapons and security, which he called a valuable first step.

Pentagon officials say US networks are repeatedly probed and hacked from Chinese sources and Washington has long pressed Beijing to address US concerns.

ZOA Agrees With Romney ? Palestinians have "no interest whatsoever" in peace with Israel

ZOA Agrees With Romney ? Palestinians have ?no interest whatsoever? in peace with Israel

?

The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) agrees and applauds Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney?s statement last May, recently reported in the media, in which he said correctly that the pursuit of Middle East peace is likely to remain ?an unsolved problem? because the Palestinians have ?no interest whatsoever? in reaching a peace agreement with Israel.?

?

In response to a question about how to ?resolve the Palestinian problem? during a speech to a private audience of campaign donors last May, Governor Romney said, ?the Palestinians have no interest whatsoever in establishing peace, and that the pathway to peace is almost unthinkable to accomplish ... I look at the Palestinians not wanting to see peace anyway,? for political purposes, committed to the destruction and elimination of Israel, and these thorny issues, and I say, ?There's just no way? ... The idea of pushing on the Israelis to give something up to get the Palestinians to act is the worst idea in the world.? (David Korn, ?SECRET VIDEO: On Israel, Romney Trashes Two-State Solution,? Mother Jones, September 18, 2012).

?

ZOA National President Morton A. Klein said, ?Governor Romney?s remarks on the unwillingness of the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the Palestinians in general to conclude a genuine peace with Israel should come as a surprise only to those who have not bothered to read what PA leaders say in Arabic about glorifying terrorism and not accepting peace with Israel or Israel as a Jewish state; what Palestinian textbooks teach their children about the Israel being an evil, foreign entity whom it is a Palestinian national and religious duty to destroy; what PA-appointed and salaried clerics tell their audiences about the religious duty of murdering Jews and fighting a jihad against Israel; and what PA officials, cleric and publications say about the Jews lacking any prior history or connection to their biblical, historic and religious homeland.

?

?PA officials, from PA president Mahmoud Abbas down, have repeatedly stated that they do not accept Israel?s existence as a Jewish state.

?

?The PA has repeatedly honored the worst Palestinian murderers of Jews, like Samir Kuntar and Dalal Mughrabi. Kuntar, a Lebanese terrorist who murdered in cold-blood a Jewish father and daughter in a terrorist assault on Israel in 1979 and has gloated of his gruesome exploits since, was given honorary Palestinian citizenship upon his release by Israel. Mughrabi, who led the terrorists in the 1978 Fatah terrorist attack on an Israeli civilian bus, leading to the coastal road massacre, in which 37 Israeli civilians, including a dozen children, were murdered, has been publicly honored by the PA with lavish ceremonies, including the naming of public squares and a computer center in her honor.

?

?PA polls have repeatedly shown that Palestinians support terror attacks upon Jews, including suicide bombings, do not accept Israel as a Jewish state, do not accept the idea of Palestinian state living in peace alongside Israel and demand the so-called ?right of return? whereby Palestinian refugees of the 1948-49 war and their millions of descendants would inundate Israel and turn its Jewish majority into an Arab-dominated minority.?

?

?People who approve of terrorism that targets innocent Jewish men, women and children are not going to live peacefully beside a Jewish state. It is no surprise that they also refuse to recognize Israel as a Jewish state nor that they insist on the so-called ?right of return.??

?

?If Palestinians were willing, peace could be had tomorrow. After all,?in 2000 and again in 2008, Israel offered the Palestinians statehood in over 95% of Judea, Samaria and all of Gaza, only to have their offers rejected without counter-offer on both occasions. In the case of 2000, the Palestinians actually responded by launching a terrorist war that claimed the lives of over 1,000 Israelis in hundreds of suicide bombings, sniper and other attacks deliberately targeting civilians. What better evidence could there be of a Palestinian lack of intention for peace or even statehood? Destroying Israel by whatever means trumps even the goal of setting up a Palestinian state.

?

?It is therefore ironic that Governor Romney?s accurate assessment of Palestinian aims and attitudes should be greeted with alarm rather than approval.

?

?We therefore strongly disagree with the idea, expressed, for example, in the Washington Post, that Governor Romney?s remarks on Palestinian unwillingness to make peace with Israel ?could compromise the GOP presidential candidate?s standing as an honest broker in the peace process should he win the election.? Truth-telling is precisely what diplomatic efforts to terminate the Arab war on Israel requires. It has been the ignoring of basic realities in favor of flat-earth claims about Palestinians wanting and seeking peace and being ready to accept Israel that has guaranteed that Western, including U.S., policy towards Israel and the Palestinians prolongs hostilities and foils any possibility of Palestinian acceptance of Israel.?

?

?A U.S. president who tells the Palestinian Authority that it will receive neither diplomatic nor financial support from the American taxpayer until it fulfills its outstanding, 19-year-old signed commitments under the Oslo agreements to arrest terrorists, dismantle terror groups and terminate incitement to hatred and murder against Israel in the PA-controlled media, mosques, schools and youth camps is a president who has the biggest chance of changing Palestinians from a society devoted to terrorism and destroying Israel into one that may one day live in peace with Israel.?

?

?Governor Romney?s remarks indicate that, were he to be elected president, he might be willing to do what President Obama and his predecessors, Republican and Democratic, have not done ? to act on the realities of the Palestinian situation and apply real, sustained pressure on the PA to change its ways.??

Curiosity Mars rover tells us that it is feeling pretty good so far

For the past month, the Curiosity Mars Rover has been methodically giving itself a health checkup, which it has been passing almost flawlessly, says NASA.

This image shows the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) on NASA's Curiosity rover, with the Martian landscape in the background. The image was taken by Curiosity's Mast Camera on the 32nd Martian day, or sol, of operations on the surface.

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity is on the verge of passing a rigorous month-long health checkup with flying colors, scientists announced today (Sept. 12).

Since?Curiosity landed?inside Mars' Gale Crater on Aug. 5, researchers have been systematically checking out the rover's systems and its 10 science instruments to make sure they're all in good working condition. Those inspections have gone very well and should be finished by the end of Curiosity's next Martian day, or sol, mission team members said today.

"The success so far of these activities has been outstanding," said Curiosity mission manager Jennifer Trosper, of NASA's?Jet Propulsion Laboratory?in Pasadena, Calif. "Throughout every phase of the checkouts, Curiosity has performed almost flawlessly."

And this commissioning phase of Curiosity's two-year mission has proceeded pretty much exactly on schedule, Trosper added. [11 Amazing Things Curiosity Can Do]

"Our estimate for the checkout activities was 25 sols, and it's taken us 26," Trosper told reporters today, explaining that a 12-sol stretch of driving activities brings Curiosity to its current Sol 37 on Mars. "So, not bad."

Getting ready to drive again

Curiosity has spent the last six sols methodically testing out its 7-foot-long (2.1 meters) robotic arm, which bears several tools on its end, including a rock-boring drill and a camera called the?Mars?Hand Lens Imager, or MAHLI.

One more sol of arm checkouts remains, Trosper said. The team also plans to point Curiosity's Mast Camera (Mastcam) toward the sky today, to watch the Martian moon Phobos cross the face of the sun. Then the $2.5 billion robot will be ready to move its six wheels again for the first time in more than a week.

"After that, starting on Friday evening, the plan is to drive, drive, drive," Trosper said.

Curiosity will stop when it finds a rock scientists deem a suitable target for observations with MAHLI and the rover's Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer instrument (APXS), which also sits on the robotic arm's turret, Trosper said.

APXS measures the abundance of chemical elements in rock and soil by exposing the material to X-rays and alpha particles (helium nuclei, consisting of two protons and two neutrons).

Is Sony releasing a new PS3 next month?

While the world is ready for the next generation of consoles, Sony apparently isn?t quite done with the current one yet.

According to Gamereactor, an online retailer in Germany has claimed that a new PS3 model will be arriving in October, featuring 12GB of flash memory on board.

Sony?s German PR man Guido Alt denied any knowledge of the console, but this isn?t the first rumour of a Super Slim PS3 to make its way across the internet.

Back in July it appeared that Sony had submitted plans for a new PS3 model to the Federal Communications Commission, fuelling the rumours.

Wedbust analyst and video game prophet Michael Pachter said last night in a research note that it looks like Sony intends to release new hardware.

?The PlayStation 3 160 GB plus Move bundle debuted at $299 in 2010, two full years ahead of Wii U?s debut. It is worth noting that PlayStation 3 160 GB plus Move bundles have disappeared off of many retailer shelves, suggesting to us that Sony is starving the channel ahead of a new hardware introduction that would likely cost less than Wii U?s Basic Set,? Pachter said.

?We can only speculate that Sony will offer a PS3 without a hard drive at a price point below $200, and we expect a PS3/Move bundle at the $249 price point in the next several weeks.?

With the Wii U launch on the horizon, and the next generation not too far off, is anyone looking to buy into PS3 at this point?

When Will Indian Telecom Finds 'Apple' Interesting?

Bangalore: Whole world went gaga over launch of iPhone5, and India wasn?t an exception, but all the excitement here was a dud; for we won?t be holding the Phone anytime soon. And it can be seen that our telecom giants are not interested in ?Apple? yet.

Telecom reasons that Apple?s business propositions for operators in India are very competitive and the price sensitive market in the country just won?t open up its arms wide.

An official from a top operator in the business, who seeks anonymity, told FP that the terms for selling the iPhone which was being proposed by Apple was an unworkable model. ?We don?t like their business proposition. They want us to sell a huge number (of iPhone), which doesn?t make commercial sense,? said the official. He also said that his company would offer the iPhone to Enterprise customers but not to regular customers.

Of India?s eight GSM mobile telephone operators, at least half of them do not want to venture in to iPhone. Even India?s largest mobile telephone operator Airtel doesn?t want to dig too deep ? though they offer 3s, 4 and 4s iPhones ? but without any data or talk-time package with it, which could make even iPhone unexciting.

Interestingly, two smaller operators in India, Aircel and Etisalat, provides its customers with special offers on the iPhone.

Aircel provides the option to buy the iPhone, be it, 3GS, 4 and 4S, in special plans, like zero rentals and a money back plan. The zero rental plans gives the customer a certain amount of free talk-time, free data usage on 2G network and free SMSs. A customer buying a 4S from Aircel can also avail a money back plan bundle, where the customer pays an upfront rental amount for 2 years, which could give them a discount of up to a 40 percent on the actual rental per month.

The iPhone offers from Etisalat are a little more modest. Customers can have a package for the iPhone 4S, where the phone will be at a subsidized cost, it will come with 4GB of data and there will be no charge for a new mobile connection.

Idea Cellular?s Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Rajat Mukharji, also agrees that Apple?s business proposition is unworkable in India, at least for now. But, he also added that his company had an alternate model they wanted to propose. ?Let?s say it?s not purely that reason. We also have our own schemes for our postpaid business and our own handsets, which we want to promote.? Another reason why Apple?s iPhone may not be on the company?s radar is that the company?s markets are mostly semi urban and rural which looks at Smartphones costing 8,000 or less, which is what they sell under their brand name.

The reasons could be many, but then the fervor for iPhone will never cease lingering around, and wants to see a beacon though far away.

Flights of fancy at Day 2 of London Fashion Week

LONDON (AP) ? A catwalk of faux grass and barefoot, denim-clad models took audiences to 1960s America. Sweet dungarees and clogs conjured up a fisherman's tale at one show, while at another the fashion crowd feasted their eyes on a concoction of pastel ruffles as delectable as roses in full bloom.

Newcomers and established designers alike took audiences on flights of fancy on Day 2 of London Fashion Week Saturday, which showcased an eclectic range of women's wear creations from the elegant to the whimsical, from the eminently wearable to structured works of art.

Britons Jasper Conran and John Rocha, two of the fashion week's most established names, both showed Saturday, with the former delivering a surprisingly fun and youthful collection and the latter wowing the crowd with the sheer technique that went into his sculptural creations.

Also featured Saturday was Kinder Aggugini, former designer at Versace; Huishan Zhang, a Chinese-born talent who delivered a refined debut show of reworked Chinese motifs; and Moschino Cheap and Chic, the Italian brand's diffusion line.

___

JASPER CONRAN

Conran's signature look is pared-down British elegance, but for next spring he offered up a playful selection on a retro Americana theme: Psychedelic flowers, blue jeans, stars and stripes, Woodstock and multi-colored patchwork.

Models walked on a catwalk made of a bed of faux grass to the tunes of Carole King, and the look was part cool cowgirl, part folksy flower children. There were denim vests, shorts and straight cut jeans, some embroidered with flowers and doves, others adorned by a silver sequined hem. Later models wore crochet, patchwork or kaleidoscope print dresses.

Prints were childlike and irreverent (think huge print of a cherry on a white shirt) and the palette was as cheerful as it gets: Bubblegum pink, coral, mustard, lime, and a tangerine that Conran called "Fanta orange."

___

JOHN ROCHA

Voluminous hooped skirts, ruffles and layers of sheer organza dominated the catwalk at Ireland-based John Rocha's show, which resembled a beautiful English garden of sculpted flowers.

A red strapless dress with an exaggerated tulip shape opened the show, its large organza ruffles imitating the frail petals of a flower.

The hooped, textured skirt then appeared layered over trousers and under sheer organza jackets. It was also repeated to great effect in a host of pastel colors: Pale lavender, mint, lemon, before appearing in gun metal, champagne, black and white. Models all wore large matching hats made of folds of organza that sat like tinted clouds on their heads.

___

MOSCHINO CHEAP & CHIC

Conran wasn't the only one who got the fun retro vibe: At Moschino Cheap and Chic there were low-slung flare trousers, flirty party dresses and a riot of bold colors.

Saturday night's show, which came complete with a live band and disco lights, featured party pieces like a candy-colored bomber jacket, an orange pant suit with jeweled lapels, and a mint pleated skirt with oversized flower sequins.

Lime, which is emerging as a popular spring color, was paired with magenta, burgundy, and orange. A standout print of blue and lime pineapples was seen on hot shorts, crop tops and capri pants, and many in the fashion crowd were left lusting after the playful pineapple handbags.

Cheap and Chic is the Italian label's diffusion line. Moschino's main line shows at Milan Fashion Week.

___

KINDER AGGUGINI

Former Versace designer Kinder Aggugini began the day with a show inspired by fishermen and the freedom of being at sea. His spring collection was themed around the traditional naval palette - blue, red and white - but he washed out the colors for a faded, carefree look to fit his "gone fishing" theme.

Gingham and prints of island life added girlish charm to the relaxed shapes, which included pieces like pinafores, low-slung shorts and men's style shirts. Hand-painted clogs pulled the looks together.

Aggugini cleverly sneaked in the ocean theme in several standout pieces: A navy blazer had a white-dyed hem to imitate the sea's waves, and a black velvet gown had a design of octopus tentacles that reached to the floor.

"It was all very fresh and sweet, very well made, very cute. It all worked," said Hilary Alexander, a veteran British fashion editor who attended the show at London Fashion Week.

___

HUISHAN ZHANG

Newcomer Huishan Zhang delivered a sophisticated debut collection Saturday that impressed the crowd with his fresh take on traditional Chinese motifs.

The tailored Chinese silk dress, the cheongsam, was updated with detachable, crystal-embellished collars, subtle prints and a refreshing palette of mint, sage, sea green and violets.

Dresses had high necklines and modest hemlines, but the way the silk hugged the body oozed sensual femininity. Prints of sparrows, pagodas and mahjong tiles lent playfulness to the elegant clothes. Silhouettes were clean and unfussy, adorned sometimes with sheer, wispy capes.

Zhang, who recently graduated from London's Central St. Martins college, spent a year working at Christian Dior before setting up his own label. His first season collection has been picked up by two retailers.

"He's delivered clothes that are appropriate for all age groups, and that's something that's quite difficult to do for a young designer," said Anne Tyrrell, a London-based design consultant. "He's one to watch, definitely."

Simple Panacotta - Home and Parenting

I love dessert! Every weekend, we normally have small gathering with friends at home. I get the benefit of getting visited often instead of visiting other houses because I am pregnant ? yeah, that!

Last week, there were only a handful who went because the month has been very busy for all of us. I cooked lunch as usual but for some reason, I crave for desserts on weekend.? There was nothing in the fridge, thus, I asked my little girl to come with me to the nearby supermarket to buy the ingredients ? I will make a Panacotta (that?s my mindset).

Off we go and got what I wanted except the strawberries so I opted for a canned of mixed tropical fruits. Here?s the recipe of what I did:

Panacotta Recipe:

400 grams heavy cream

1/2 cup full cream milk

100 grams sugar

1 sachet gelatin powder (or agar-agar for Asian)

Mixed Fruits

Procedure:

- Cook the gelatin powder as instructed in the pack ? normally boil water and add the powder

- Mix full cream milk, sugar, heavy cream and bring it to boil

- Add the gelatin mix and stir

- Put into a mold, let cool and add your fruits on top!

I don?t have a mold at home but I have several cute wine glass so I made use of them. I put a layer of the gelatin/cream mix, let it cool a bit then I added some fruits. I added another layer of gelatin/cream mix and finally put some more fruits at the top!

It was yum-oh! I felt like eating panacotta and fruit salad in one. I?m glad there wasn?t any strawberries in the supermarket that day because I got to try the mixed tropical fruit for this recipe. Try it!

Homes for sale: neighbours include Barclays and Morgan Stanley

LONDON (Reuters) - Canary Wharf Group is considering the construction of the first block of apartments on the east London financial estate of the same name, underlining how an area dominated by bank-branded skyscrapers is betting on a more eclectic future.

The planned location is a site called Newfoundland in the west of the estate, not far from office blocks occupied by banks including Morgan Stanley and Barclays.

It echoes a trend in London's main City financial district and in the West End, where developers are increasingly betting on more valuable residential schemes over offices to meet strong demand from overseas buyers seeking to park their money in London property.

Banks are also retrenching in the wake of the financial crisis and are increasingly looking at cheaper options for offices. Bank of America for instance is weighing up plans to move back-office staff away from Canary Wharf into cheaper offices in the north of England, Reuters reported last month.

"It's a possibility at the moment but it would give the area a different sort of flavour" said John Garwood, company secretary at Songbird Estates, majority owner of Canary Wharf Group, on a conference call with journalists.

The 97-acre Canary Wharf district in east London began luring major banks after it was created in the early 1990s, with the promise of cheaper rents, larger trading floors and better-appointed offices.

Construction of homes on the site would also fit within wider plans the company has for a 17-acre site adjacent to Canary Wharf called Wood Wharf, that it plans to develop over the next 10 to 12 years.

It announced the appointment of architect Terry Farrell - known for London landmarks such as the riverside headquarters of Britain's secret intelligence service - on Friday to design the Wood Wharf scheme.

This latter plan envisages about 3,000 homes covering double the floor space than envisaged under an earlier design and over 2 million square feet of offices that will be lower-rise than the main estate and will target media and technology companies.

"With the huge success of the Olympics ... this part of London is now much more than a global financial centre," Farrell said.

Zuckerberg statement lifts Facebook stock, sort of

By Alexei Oreskovic, Reuters

SAN FRANCISCO -- Facebook Inc CEO Mark Zuckerberg might need to talk more often. A 30-minute appearance at a technology industry conference earlier this week has translated into $6.785 billion in additional market valuation for his company.

Facebook shares finished Friday's regular trading session up 6.2 percent at $22 as Wall Street's confidence in the company continued to improve in the wake of the 28-year-old CEO's first public appearance since a rocky initial public offering in May.

The social networking company's progress introducing a new advertising service that gives marketers improved ways to reach consumers on Facebook also helped bolster its shares, analysts said.

"People are starting to feel a little more comfortable," said Arvind Bhatia, an analyst with Sterne, Agree & Leach.

Zuckerberg's comments, in which he highlighted mobile business progress, suggested Facebook could enter the search market and expressed confidence in future money-making prospects, have improved the perception of the stock, said Bhatia.

Zuckerberg has a reputation for spending his time building the company from the inside rather than going around promoting it to investors.

On Thursday, Facebook said its nascent ad exchange was no longer in testing mode, and several advertising agencies reported encouraging early results using the service.?

The Facebook Ad Exchange allows marketers to target consumers with pitches based on their past Web browsing activity, such as the websites they've visited -- a standard online advertising technique that until now has not been available on Facebook.

The ad exchange hints at improved monetization potential for Facebook, said Lazard Capital Markets analyst William Bird.

The world's No.1 online social network with 955 million users, Facebook has faced a rough debut since its May initial public offering. Investors and analysts have fretted about a sharp slowdown in its revenue growth. Shares of Facebook remain well below their $38 offering price.

The ongoing expiration of "lock-up" restrictions on Facebook insiders selling shares have added further pressure on the stock.

"I don't think they're completely out of the woods, but it does feel like the sentiment is improving," said Sterne, Agee & Leach's Bhatia.

The shares are up roughly 13 percent since Zuckerberg spoke at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in San Francisco on Tuesday.?
