After stumbles, Romney looks to Poland as final chance to project world affairs leadership

WARSAW, Poland - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was left looking to Poland as a final opportunity to project the image of a leader ready to stand on the world stage after inadvertently insulting the British and angering Palestinians in the first stops on his three-nation tour.

Romney is stressing the United States' long ties with Poland as he caps a weeklong foreign tour on Tuesday that was intended to prove his leadership on world affairs and highlight his differences with President Barack Obama.

Romney is readying a foreign policy speech for delivery at the end of his tour that began last week in Britain and took him to Israel.

It's not clear whether Romney's stumbles will affect his prospects for defeating Obama in the November U.S. presidential election. The economy, not foreign affairs, has been the dominant issue in what polls show to be a tight race.

But the outrage generated by Romney's remarks has undermined his attempt to avoid political risk as he made his first steps onto the world stage as the presumptive Republican nominee.

Romney has been visiting countries that are staunch U.S. allies, limited questions from the media and arranged made-for-TV appearances at symbolic venues in London and Jerusalem. It was all intended to demonstrate he was ready to handle foreign affairs smoothly and lead during dangerous times.

The two-day trip to Poland is aimed at Polish-American and Catholic voters in the U.S. and will highlight Romney's stance toward Russia. He has labeled Russia as America's "No. 1 geopolitical foe," a characterization that's not unwelcome in a country that still fears Russia. Poles generally have been skeptical of Obama's "reset" with Russia, and Romney has cited Polish concerns in his criticism of Obama.

He'll deliver his remarks in a deeply Roman Catholic country that for years has favoured Republicans over Democrats. This is partly a legacy of President Ronald Reagan, whose efforts helped bring down communism across Eastern Europe, for which Poles remain grateful.

Poland has been a stalwart U.S. ally and significant contributor to military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. As a former Soviet bloc nation that has been subjugated by bigger European powers throughout history, it remains particularly worried about Russian policy.

Some in Poland and the neighbouring Czech Republic were upset by the Obama administration's decision to revise the Bush-era missile defence plan for Europe, which included sites in both countries.

Romney's visit, campaign officials said, was at the invitation of Lech Walesa, the Polish labour leader who co-founded the Solidarity movement and served as Poland's president during the country's transition out of communism.

Walesa effectively endorsed Romney when the Republican presidential candidate visited him Monday at the Artus Center in a historic neighbourhood of the Baltic port city of Gdansk.

"I wish you to be successful because the success is needed to the United States, of course, but to Europe as well and to the rest of the world, too. So, Gov. Romney, get your success, be successful," Walesa told Romney through a translator.

Walesa suggested Romney's leadership was needed to restore America's position in the world.

Romney is set to meet with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski on Tuesday before his speech.

Walesa's backing is meant to influence Catholics and labour union members in the U.S. But Rep. Marcy Kaptur, an Ohio Democrat, told reporters Monday that the Polish visit "is nothing more than a superficial diversion and a desperate attempt to pander to Polish Americans and Catholics across our country."

"This trip is not going to change the November election," she said.

Romney's visit to Poland was not without controversy. The current leadership of Solidarity distanced itself from the event and issued a statement critical of Romney on Monday.

Solidarity characterized Romney as being hostile to unions and against labour rights. It emphasized that it had no role in organizing Romney's visit and expressed support for American labour organizations.

Romney arrived in Poland after outraging Palestinians in a speech he gave to Jewish donors in Jerusalem earlier Monday. Romney suggested that their Jewish culture was part of what has allowed them to be more economically successful than the Palestinians. Kind words for Israel are standard for many American politicians, but Palestinian leaders suggested his specific comments were racist and out of touch with the realities of the Middle East.

Predictably, Obama's campaign was critical, with senior strategist David Axelrod saying on Twitter: "Is there anything about Romney's Rolling Ruckus that would inspire confidence in his ability to lead US foreign policy?"

Romney's missteps in the past week have fueled opponents' contentions that the former businessman and Massachusetts governor is out of touch with the U.S. and the world he hopes to lead.

As the trip got under way, Romney caused a stir in Britain by questioning whether officials there were fully prepared to host the Olympic Games. The dispute overshadowed his efforts to highlight his personal experience leading the Salt Lake City Winter Games a decade ago. Instead, Romney was widely assailed by the London media and criticized by British leaders.

Then on his first day in Israel, Romney distanced himself from an adviser's suggestion that he would "respect" a decision by Israel to launch military action to prevent Iran from achieving nuclear weapons capability.

At Monday's fundraiser, Romney shared a sentiment he sometimes talks about on the campaign trail in the U.S. and repeats in his book, "No Apology." But his decision to highlight cultural differences in a region where such differences have helped fuel violence for generations prompted new questions about his diplomatic skills ? and enraged Palestinian leaders.

Comparing economic output per capita in Israel and "across the areas managed by the Palestinian Authority," he declared that "you notice such a dramatically stark difference in economic vitality." He was speaking to about 40 wealthy Jewish American donors at the King David Hotel, which is within sight of the Palestinian territory on the West Bank.

He said some economic histories have theorized that "culture makes all the difference."

"And as I come here and I look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things," Romney said, citing an innovative business climate, the Jewish history of thriving in difficult circumstances and the "hand of providence." He said similar disparity exists between other neighbouring countries, including Mexico and the United States.

Palestinian leaders quickly objected.

"It seems to me this man lacks information, knowledge, vision and understanding of this region and its people," said Saeb Erekat, a senior aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. "It is a racist statement, and this man doesn't realize that the Palestinian economy cannot reach its potential because there is an Israeli occupation."

"This will cause a lot of damage to American interests," he said.

Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said later that Romney's comments "were grossly mischaracterized."

The campaign added that Romney's comparison of countries that are close to each other and have wide income disparities ? the U.S. and Mexico, Chile and Ecuador ? shows his comments were broader than just the comparison between Israel and the Palestinians.

At the White House, spokesman Josh Earnest said, "One of the challenges of being an actor on the international stage, particularly when you're travelling to such a sensitive part of the world, is that your comments are very closely scrutinized for meaning, for nuance, for motivation."

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) ? James Holmes appeared just as dazed as he did in his first court appearance last week after the deadly Colorado movie theater shootings.

In a packed Denver-area courtroom Monday, Holmes, 24, sat silently and did not react as he heard formal charges against him, including first-degree murder for each of the 12 who died and attempted murder for each of the 58 people who were injured in one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent U.S. history.

At one point, a shackled Holmes, still with his hair dyed orange-red, leaned over to speak with one of his lawyers and furrowed his brow.

When the judge asked the former neuroscience student if he agreed with his attorney's request to delay a future court hearing so his defense team could have more time to prepare, Holmes said softly: "Yea."

Some of the people in the court wore Batman T-shirts. Several people clasped their hands and bowed their heads as if in prayer before the hearing. At least one victim attended, and she was in a wheelchair and had bandages on her leg and arm. One unidentified man glared at Holmes throughout the hearing.

Holmes was charged with 24 counts of murder, two each for the 12 victims, and 116 counts of attempted murder, two each for the 58 injured.

For the murder charges, one count included murder with deliberation, the other murder with extreme indifference. Both counts carry a maximum death penalty upon conviction; the minimum is life without parole.

A conviction under extreme indifference means that any life sentences would have to be served consecutively, not concurrently, said Craig Silverman, a former chief deputy district attorney in Denver.

In addition, Holmes was charged with one count of possession of explosives and one count of a crime of violence.

Legal analysts expect the case to be dominated by arguments over the defendant's sanity.

Attorneys also argued over a defense motion to find out who leaked information to the news media about a package the 24-year-old Holmes allegedly sent to his psychiatrist at the University of Colorado Denver.

Authorities seized the package July 23, three days after the shooting, after finding it in the mailroom of the medical campus where Holmes studied.

Several media outlets reported that it contained a notebook with descriptions of an attack, but Arapahoe County District Attorney Carol Chambers said in court papers that the parcel hadn't been opened by the time the "inaccurate" news reports appeared.

Prosecutor Tamara Brady said Monday she will subpoena psychiatrist Lynne Fenton to testify in the dispute over whether a notebook is privileged because of a possible doctor-patient relationship. A hearing on the matter was set for Aug. 16.

District Chief Judge William Sylvester set an Aug. 9 hearing on a motion filed by news organizations seeking to have the case docket unsealed.

A hearing to update the status of the case was set for Sept. 27. A hearing to review evidence matters and to determine whether Holmes should continue to be held without bail was set for the week of Nov. 9.

Unlike Holmes' first court appearance July 23, Monday's hearing was not televised. At the request of the defense, Sylvester barred video and still cameras from the hearing, saying expanded coverage could interfere with Holmes' right to a fair trial.

Last week, Sylvester allowed a live video feed that permitted the world its first glimpse of the shooting suspect. With an unruly mop of orange hair, Holmes appeared bleary-eyed and distracted. He did not speak.

Security was tight for Monday's hearing. Armed officers were stationed on the roof of both buildings at the court complex, and law enforcement vehicles blocked entrances to the buildings.

Investigators said Holmes began stockpiling gear for his assault four months ago and bought his weapons in May and June, well before the shooting spree just after midnight during a showing of "The Dark Knight Rises." He was arrested by police outside the theater.

Analysts said that means it's likely there's only one main point of legal dispute between prosecutors and the defense.

"I don't think it's too hard to predict the path of this proceeding," said Craig Silverman, a former chief deputy district attorney in Denver. "This is not a whodunit. ... The only possible defense is insanity."

Under Colorado law, defendants are not legally liable for their acts if their minds are so "diseased" that they cannot distinguish between right and wrong. However, the law warns that "care should be taken not to confuse such mental disease or defect with moral obliquity, mental depravity, or passion growing out of anger, revenge, hatred, or other motives, and kindred evil conditions."

Experts said there are two levels of insanity defenses.

Holmes' public defenders could argue he is not mentally competent to stand trial, which is the argument by lawyers for Jared Loughner, who is accused of killing six people in 2011 in Tucson, Ariz., and wounding several others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Loughner, who has pleaded not guilty to 49 charges, has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and is undergoing treatment at a Missouri prison facility in a bid to make him mentally fit to stand trial.

If Holmes' attorneys cannot convince the court that he is mentally incompetent, and he is convicted, they can try to stave off a possible death penalty by arguing he is mentally ill. Prosecutors will decide whether to seek the death penalty in the coming weeks.

Holmes was not expected to enter pleas on Monday.

He ultimately could verbally enter a plea to the anticipated dozen first-degree murder charges, or his attorneys could enter it for him. Prosecutors may file multiple counts of attempted first-degree murder and other charges against Holmes, who booby trapped his apartment with the intent to kill any officers responding there the night of the theater attack, Aurora police said.

Sam Kamin, a law professor at the University of Denver, said there is "pronounced" evidence that the attack was premeditated, which would seem to make an insanity defense difficult. "But," he said, "the things that we don't know are what this case is going to hinge on, and that's his mental state."

Friends in Southern California, where Holmes grew up, describe him as a smart, sometimes awkward youth fascinated by science. He came to Colorado's competitive neuroscience doctoral program in June 2011. A year later, he dropped out shortly after taking his year-end exam.

Sylvester has tried to tightly control the flow of information about Holmes, placing a gag order on lawyers and law enforcement, sealing the court file and barring the university from releasing public records relating to Holmes' year there.

A consortium of media organizations, including The Associated Press, is challenging Sylvester's sealing of the court file.

On Friday, court papers revealed that Holmes was seeing a psychiatrist at the university. But they did not say how long he was seeing Fenton and if it was for a mental illness or another problem.

The University of Colorado's website identified Fenton as the medical director of the school's Student Mental Health Services.

An online resume listed schizophrenia as one of her research interests and stated that she sees 10 to 15 graduate students a week for medication and psychotherapy, as well as five to 10 patients in her general practice as a psychiatrist.

Can Carb Refeeds Boost Stalled Weight Loss? | Mark's Daily Apple

Welcome! If you want to lose weight, gain muscle, increase energy levels, reduce stress or just generally look and feel healthier you've come to the right place.

sweetpotatoes2 1Sometimes, weight loss slows. Sometimes, what worked amazingly well before, stops working quite the same. Although this can be scary, frustrating, annoying, or all of the above when progress slows, stops, or requires new input to continue like it was is ultimately okay, because we are an adaptive species.?We can change things up, shift stuff around. Physiological processes (among which weight loss and metabolism can certainly be counted) are never linear ? that?s partly what makes all this stuff so endlessly engaging.

Today, I revisit a strategy for overcoming these lulls in weight loss induced by low carb: carb (re)feeds. They seem counterintuitive, sort of, especially if you?ve had success restricting carbs, but hold you opinions until you read on. I think you?ll find it enlightening.

Dear Mark: Your blog is a treasure trove of valuable information. Thank you for keeping this resource available to us!

This is a question that I think many of your readers would appreciate seeing addressed in a post. [Background: I've been studying (and trying, periodically) various low carb regimens for many years, with varying degrees of success. I'm looking to metabolize off about 30-40 pounds of excess fat, build lean muscle and optimize my health and fitness.]

My question is, what do you think of the increasingly common recommendation (from various diet and fitness gurus) to ?spike? calories and carbs one day per week, in order to keep the body from down-regulating certain mechanisms too much due to continued low carbohydrate intake? The theory is that a once-per-week carb/calorie spike gives the metabolism a boost, and keeps weight loss going at a better rate than simply sticking to the low carb regimen seven days per week.

I?m wondering if this recommendation for one ?free day? per week is helpful or harmful to the objective of significantly reducing excess body fat over a period of a few months, and staying lean for life. I don?t mean a ?be a fool and eat garbage? day, but an honest ?spike the carbs and calories with healthy foods? day. What do you think: Would this be a weight loss booster overall, or just a setback on the road to burning excess fat and getting to an optimally lean body composition?

Thanks, Mark! I (and I?m sure your other readers) will value your opinion on this.

Dee

I?m happy to help. Thanks for the kind words.

Short answer: Yes, I think there is something to the lowish-carber?s occasional carb and calorie fest. Its relevance to a given individual depends on that person?s metabolic situation, of course, but I wouldn?t dismiss it out of hand. Check out my previous posts on leptin and?carb refeeds and weight loss to get an idea.

Longer answer: If you?re eating low-carb and low-calorie (which low-carb tends to promote on account of its inherent satiety) and the weight has stopped dropping, you may be low in leptin. Why does leptin matter, and what do calories and carbs have to do with it?

Leptin is a hormone that fulfills two primary roles, as far as metabolism and weight loss go ? it increases (or lowers) energy expenditure, depending on perceived energy availability, and it inhibits appetite. Both actions actually happen in the brain, but it?s leptin that gives the brain the message. If perceived energy availability is ?low,? energy expenditure drops and appetite increases. If perceived energy availability is ?high,? energy expenditure increases and appetite drops. That?s a quick and dirty (and incomplete) overview, but it serves our purposes for today?s discussion.

How does the body ?perceive? energy availability?

Body fat is, quite literally, stored energy. It?s also an endocrine organ that secretes leptin, the amount of which in circulation is directly proportional to the amount of adipose tissue on your body. So, the leaner you get, the less body fat (and less stored energy) you have available to drive leptin secretion. Even if you?re not as lean as you?d prefer to be, your lower body fat levels are low enough that the brain isn?t getting the ?high energy availability? message from leptin.

Insulin is another indicator of energy availability. Sure enough, insulin increases leptin secretion in fat cells. As far as the body?s concerned, if insulin is present in significant amounts, food has just been eaten, which means food is probably available in the environment. If food is readily available, the body doesn?t need to cram as much food in, nor does it have to conserve energy. It can do things that aren?t essential to immediate survival, like play a game, have sex, go explore, or work out, because there?s plenty of energy available. Leptin goes up, reducing appetite and increasing expenditure. Problems arise with leptin resistance, of course, when your insulin is constantly elevated, but I?ll get to that later.

Carbohydrate content of the diet, perhaps independently of the increase in insulin, also affects leptin levels. Protein also increases leptin, and fat seems not to, but carbohydrates have the largest effect.

Overall calorie content of the diet is an indicator of energy availability. Studies show that calorie restriction causes the body to lower serum leptin levels in order to protect against further weight loss, and that supplementary leptin kickstarts weight loss all over again.

Ultimately, then, leptin is how the body senses both incoming and stored energy. It goes up in response to food eaten, as well as food stored. And since day-to-day survival of an organism is largely about energy availability, the presence or absence of leptin can make life pretty awesome or pretty awful. This doesn?t just impact weight loss or gain; it impacts your enjoyment of life. Low leptin? You might not feel like taking that walk with your friend. You probably won?t want to work out. Your libido might suffer. You might not feel like doing much of anything except sit around.

Can you see why lagging leptin might be an issue in stalled weight loss during a diet? You?re dropping calories (an indicator of reduced energy availability), dropping body fat (an indicator of reduced energy availability), and, especially if you?re low-carb, you?re dropping insulin and carbs (an indicator of reduced energy availability). All these things tell the body to make less leptin, and less leptin means higher appetite (so you eat more) and lower energy expenditure (so you burn less fat and don?t feel like doing much of anything).

How Should You Do It?

As I mentioned in the refeed post, keep the fat content of your meals down when doing a carb feed ? about 50 grams for the day. Why? For one, fat doesn?t have as much an effect on leptin as carbs or protein do, and two, since triglycerides have been shown to prevent leptin from crossing the blood-brain barrier (into the brain where leptin does its work), the increased postprandial triglycerides (which are a normal, temporary, physiological consequence of eating fat and different from elevated fasting triglycerides) may reduce the effectiveness of leptin.

The greater you normally restrict carbs, the more you eat on your refeed. If you?re hanging out in the 100-150 gram range, you probably won?t need much ? if any ? of a boost in carbs. If you?re below 100 grams, I?d do 250 grams or so. If very low carb (below 50 grams), shoot for 300-350.

Do your refeed on a training day. Lift/sprint/run/hike/play big and, then, eat big. Your insulin sensitivity?and?leptin sensitivity will be high, your glycogen will be depleted, and you will basically be set up to store/burn the carbs and muscle energy rather than store it as fat. Leptin will increase regardless if you train or not, but doing it on a training day will mitigate any metabolic fallout.

Don?t use this as an excuse for stuffing your face with garbage. I mean, I suppose you could truly turn it into a cheat day and eat a couple pizzas, a gallon of ice cream, and a platter of crispy oxidized soybean oil-infused whatevers, but you?ll have better results with potatoes and yams (or even rice) and animals.

Who Shouldn?t Do It?

A big carb feeding isn?t right for everyone. I would say that for the severely overweight-to-obese, you should not be messing around with carb feeds. It?s not that they?ll wreak irreparable amounts of damage on your metabolism or anything; they just won?t be very helpful. See, the obese tend to be insulin-resistant (PDF). They have tons of leptin in circulation, far more than lean individuals, but?it cannot do its intended job. Instead of telling the muscles to burn more fat for energy and telling the brain to quell the appetite, leptin?s message in the obese is muffled, stifled, hamstrung. It can?t get through. Lack of leptin is not the problem, as the considerable amounts of adipose tissue are doing a fine enough job manufacturing the stuff. Sensitivity to leptin in the brain and periphery is the problem.?Thus, adding more leptin to the bunch via dietary manipulation won?t help, and it may even compound the problem. Improving leptin sensitivity is the real issue here, and a lowish-carb Primal eating and general lifestyle plan?(with adequate sleep, smart training, and plenty of stress mitigation) is the best way to do that.

Who Should Do It?

Leptin is most effective in the lean, moderately lean, and somewhat chubby (yes, those are absolutely technical terms). Men with six-packs, four-packs, two-packs, and men and women with a light layer of subcutaneous blubber covering everything up tend (a la those hunter-gatherers who aren?t exactly ?ripped,? but definitely not unhealthy) to be essentially leptin-sensitive. In these individuals,?leptin acutely boosts skeletal muscle fatty acid oxidation.

Those with ?stubborn? body fat, those on an extended stall, or the otherwise lean who can?t quite seem to get the last dozen pounds to disappear are prime candidates for a big refeed. They?re not so overweight that leptin resistance is likely, so they?ll benefit from a general increase in leptin. They?re fairly lean, so circulating leptin is lower.

Anyone who?s ?feeling off? from low-carb Primal, despite their best efforts. Say you?ve given the low-carb flu a chance to pass over, you?ve addressed your sleep and stress, you?re not trying to train like a pro athlete, and you?re still feeling run down and unable to lose weight? Throw in a big carb feed.

What about you guys? Have you experimented with carb refeeding, and if so, how did it impact your weight loss efforts?

Thanks for reading!

If you wish to be a writer, write. - Naming Your Story

Written by writ-write-wrote

"This is one thing I love to give advice and ponder about, but absolutely stink at doing. Titles can make or break your story?they can be the deciding factor of whether or not a potential reader becomes a reader. There isn?t a surefire formula with which you can get the perfect name, but there are some key points you might want to keep in mind while naming your story.

? Creativity

If you?re lacking in creativity, naming your story will take more effort. I know most (hopefully all) writers have creativity; I?ll elaborate. Naming a story generally requires the short-and-sweet, right-to-the-point sort of creativity. You can be the most creative writer in the world, with swirly words and beautiful descriptions, amazing plot twists and intriguing characters? and a title could be the most difficult part of your story, because you can?t think of a way to capture your story in seven words or less.

? Length

I would suggest not making your title an entire paragraph, or even a full sentence. As I?ve said above, I think seven words is a nice limiter, when you include conjunctions (and, but, or) and articles (a/an, the). (I didn?t realize this until after writing this, but even the Harry Potter books follow this rule.)

? The Mood

I have a hard time expressing how the mood effects your title possibilities. I?m starting to think it doesn?t, actually. It?s just that different titles give different impressions. A story called ?A Visit With Dad? about a girl who has to go to a jail to get her monthly visit with her mother-murdering father would suggest that it?s not an odd occurrence to her. Maybe it happened when she was such a little kid that she?s been doing this all her life. If you called the story ?Gathering Memories of Mom?, it might suggest that she?s only visiting to learn about her mother, or perhaps she?s trying to find out who she is, and looking into her ancestry is somewhere she thinks she needs to start.

Basically, with the mood, you?ll have to go with your instinct?does the title fit? (Now I?m wondering why I made you read that long paragraph only to tell you that I?ll be no help? Sorry about that.)

? Symbolism

Using symbolism in your title could be a very good thing. I would suggest using symbolism from a turning point in your story. For example, if the plot is that the main character rushes into a corporation of assassins to save her brother, and while doing so ends up losing the ribbon holding up her hair, a good title might be ?As the Blue [or whatever other color; or no color] Ribbon Falls?. In this case, the title would be in reference to the drastic lifestyle change from ?average high school girl? to ?girl on the run with her brother trying not to be killed by a corporation of assassins?.

Symbolism could also be for a key item, person, or place. If a key character is thought of as a fox by someone else important to the story (it could be the main character; or it could just be a general thought of the community), your title could be based around that person. With this, titles could be metaphors or similes as well. I suggested that the thought be from a main character only because, if it?s just the thought of one old farmer who?s merely someone who gives information?especially if that old farmer never appears before or after this?it doesn?t mean much to the story. It would be like calling your story about a slave seeking revenge for her husband?s cruel death ?Aussie? because she once used a random citizen?s shower and used the Aussie conditioner.

~

I could go on with all the little things I?ve come up with. The most important things about a title are that it fits, and it?s something that could make you stop scanning all the books on the store?s shelf (or wherever it?s being shared) and think ?This sounds interesting?? If you think of your story as an essay, your title is probably the most important attention grabber."

Gay marriage ban supporter named SF archbishop

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? A vigorous supporter of California's same-sex marriage ban was named Friday as the next Roman Catholic archbishop of San Francisco.

The Vatican announced that Pope Benedict XVI selected the Rev. Salvatore Cordileone, the presiding bishop of Oakland, to replace Archbishop George Niederauer in October. Niederauer, 76, is retiring.

As an auxiliary bishop in San Diego four years ago, Cordileone, 56, was instrumental in devising an initiative to strip same-sex couples of the right to wed in California and then raising Catholic dollars to qualify it for the ballot.

He also was part of a statewide network of clergy that promoted the measure, known as Proposition 8. Campaign finance records show he personally gave at least $6,000 to back the voter-approved ban.

Since last year, Cordileone has been chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage.

In an interview with the National Catholic Register last year, Cordileone said that same-sex marriage is "a very serious social experiment that will have dire consequences." Opposing it is "not a matter of religion," he said.

At a news conference at St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco Friday, he said he thought the Roman Catholic Church had come a long way in addressing the issue of clergy sex abuse and reiterated his position on gay marriages.

"Marriage can only come about through the embrace of a man and a woman coming together," he said. "I don't see how that is discriminatory against anyone."

Gay rights groups criticized the Pope's choice of Cordileone to lead the San Francisco Archdiocese, which serves more than 400,000 Catholics in the city and neighboring Marin and San Mateo counties. As archbishop, he also will oversee the bishops in Honolulu, Las Vegas, Oakland, Reno, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Jose, Santa Rosa, and Stockton.

"While LGBT Catholics and their allies have worked relentlessly to create welcoming environments, the appointment of Bishop Cordileone sends a chilling message that, in the eyes of the hierarchy, same-sex relationships are not worthy of equal dignity and respect," Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin said.

A Field Poll released in February found that 51 percent of the Catholic respondents support same-sex marriages.

Vilma court hearing ends with no decision on TRO

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? A hearing in federal court for suspended Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma has wrapped up without an immediate decision about whether he can temporarily return to work.

Vilma is trying to persuade U.S. District Judge Ginger Berrigan to impose a temporary restraining order while his lawsuit against NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell proceeds.

Berrigan did not say when she would rule but has expressed an interest in a quick resolution.

Vilma, former teammates and New Orleans assistant head coach Joe Vitt testified Thursday that Vilma never put up cash for tackles that injured opponents.

Retired Saints Troy Evans and Randall Gay also testified on Vilma's behalf, along with current New Orleans defensive players Roman Harper, Sedrick Ellis, Jonathan Casillas and Scott Shanle.

'I'd Take A Bullet For You' Became Very Real In Aurora | YourTango

aurora, batman, dark knight
Balloons with the names of "Dark Knight" shooting victims in Aurora, Colorado.

Heartbreaking stories emerge after the Aurora, Colorado "Dark Knight" movie theater shooting.

By now, we've all heard of the tragedy that occurred at an Aurora, Colorado screening of The Dark Knight Rises last Friday morning. Twelve died and dozens were wounded as a gunman opened fire on innocent patrons just trying to enjoy a night out at the movies.?Among them were several couples.

It's easy to say, "I'd take a bullet for you," to a significant other; especially when most of us (thankfully) never have to actually place ourselves between harm's way and our loved one. But on that night in Aurora, many couples aiming to enjoy a date night found themselves trapped in an unimaginably frightening scenario.

While some fled, others emerged as heroes. You may have heard the story of Jamie Rohrs, a father who left his girlfriend and their two very-young children in the theater as he escaped. He even drove away, returning to the scene only after his girlfriend called him to say she and the kids were okay. While there are mixed opinions about this situation, many are telling his girlfriend (who he later proposed to) not to marry him.

Then there's Isaiah Bow, who had also initially escaped the theater. Upon realizing his girlfriend was still inside, however, he ran back in to help her. Both are alive today.

Sadly, not every hero in the theater survived the shooting. Jon Blunk, a 25-year-old veteran of the United States Navy, reportedly pushed his girlfriend to the ground and hid her under a seat before shielding her body with his own. Blunk's girlfriend, Jansen Young, survived, but Blunk did not. "He'll never be forgotten," Young has said. "Jon took a bullet for me."

Protection was also the initial instinct of Alex Teves, a 24-year-old who was at the screening with his girlfriend, Amanda Lindgren. Teves put Lindgren's safety first, throwing her to the ground to protect her from the gunfire. As he moved to join her on the floor, he was shot.

Also among the heroes: Matt McQuinn, 26, who dove on top of his girlfriend, Samantha Yowler, to shield her from the bullets. McQuinn ended up being fatally wounded, while Yowler is currently recovering from taking a bullet to the knee.

It's hard to imagine ever having to put the phrase, "I'd take a bullet for you," to practice, and while many say they'd die for the one they love, being in-the-moment of an act of terror likely throws romance out the window more often than not. And that shouldn't really come under criticism ??it's instinctual to protect ourselves.

Though these stories of heroism are heartbreaking, they shed some light on the fact that good still does exist in the world. Love is a strong bond, and it prevailed in these scenarios. Let's hope that in the days that follow, each and every victim of the Aurora tragedy is remembered and respected, and that all are taking steps toward healing after this awful event.

Feds act to stop sale of magnetic Buckyballs

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Buckyballs are high-powered desktop magnetic toys for adults, but some young children are swallowing the tiny magnets and getting hurt. Teens also have accidentally ingested the magnetic balls after trying to mimic tongue piercings, leading the government to take steps to stop the sale of the product.

In an unusual move, the Consumer Product Safety Commission filed an administrative complaint Wednesday against New York-based Maxfield and Oberton, the manufacturer of Buckyballs. The desktop toys have small but very powerful magnets that are strong enough to mold into different shapes.

The safety commission says the company refused to recall the product. On another front, the agency said it was able to persuade about 10 retailers, including Amazon.com, to stop selling Buckyballs.

In a statement, Maxfield and Oberton called the agency actions "unfair, unjust and un-American." Company founder Craig Zucker said his products are marketed to people 14 and older and carry clear warning labels to keep them away from kids.

Since 2009, the CPSC says, at least a dozen children have swallowed the magnets. Some required surgery.

One of those needing emergency surgery was Sabrina Lopez, 12, in Bakersfield, Calif.

Betty Lopez said she and her daughter were preparing dinner earlier this year when her daughter told her that a friend had brought Buckyballs to school and the girls were pretending to have tongue piercings. Her mom says while Sabrina was twisting her tongue with the balls in her mouth, she accidentally swallowed them.

"It's extremely frightening," Betty Lopez said in an AP interview. "She could have died."

The girl was rushed to urgent care and an X-ray showed she had swallowed four magnets. She had emergency surgery and spent six days in the hospital.

In its complaint, the commission says the powerful magnets can get stuck in the gastrointestinal walls, leading to perforations that can cause serious injury or death.

In one case the agency cited, a 4-year-old boy accidentally ingested three Buckyballs magnets that he thought were chocolate candy "because they looked like the decorations on his mother's wedding cake."

Last year, CPSC issued a safety warning about high-powered magnets. Since then, however, the agency says it has continued to receive reports of children swallowing the tiny magnets.

Maxfield and Oberton's Zucker said his company will fight the agency.

"We worked with the commission in order to do an education video less than 9 months ago, so we are shocked they are taking this action," he added.

If the administrative law judge rules in favor of the commission, then CPSC could compel Maxfield to stop the sale of its Buckyballs. But the company could appeal to the agency's four commissioners. It could also appeal in federal court. The commission typically negotiates product recalls with companies, and they usually work out an agreement. The last time the agency filed an administrative complaint against a company was in 2001 in a BB gun case.

Living Wills Make Final Wishes Known | The Confuse

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012 at 4:12 am ?

People remember how sad they felt while Terri Schiavo withered away; as they watched the woman?s family fight over what they thought she wanted.

You Should Have A Living Will

While Living Wills have existed for some time, they have become household words since the Schiavo case ? the Florida woman who suffered severe brain damage in 1990 and became the centre of a legal and moral debate which culminated in her passing away on March 31, 13 days after her feeding tube had been removed.

The controversy pitted Schiavo?s parents, who wanted to keep their daughter alive, against Schiavo?s husband, who said she wanted to die rather live in such a state. Politicians joined in the debate as did church leaders. People around the nation argued the moral and ethical implications of Schiavo?s condition.

Schiavo did not have a Living Will ? a written, legal document that clearly expresses what a patient would want done if their condition is terminal and incurable, an important message to your loved ones when you are no longer able to communicate.

While common sense would say Living Wills are more important for the elderly it?s important for adults of all ages to have such documents because you never know when tragedy will strike. Schiavo was only 26 when she collapsed in her home.

There are people who are young that don?t realize this is important, but it is. The Living Will gives you a chance to make a decision you want about life and death.

Who Needs A Living Will?

Everybody needs a Living Will. You can be in charge, regarding the way you are treated at the end of your life.

Nobody in their right mind would want their family to be dragged through something like the Schiavo case. Anybody, regardless of age, should seriously consider how they will be treated, as long as they are living by the medical community.

It is important to have a Will and a Living Will for the children. It makes it easier on families if a situation arrives, so they don?t have to make a decision on their own. It?s never too early to have a Will or a Living Will.

Possible market for new functional food reported in the Journal of Dairy Science

Amsterdam, The Netherlands, July 23, 2012 American ginseng is reported to have neurocognitive effects, and research has shown benefits in aging, central nervous system disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases. The challenges of incorporating ginseng into food are twofold: it has a bitter taste, and food processing can eliminate its healthful benefits. Reporting in the August issue of the Journal of Dairy Science, a group of scientists has formulated low-lactose functional milk that maintained beneficial levels of American ginseng after processing. An exploratory study found the product was readily accepted by a niche group of consumers.

"Our goal was to develop low-lactose milk that could be consumed by the elderly to improve cognitive function," reports lead investigator S. Fiszman, PhD, of the Instituto de Agroquimica y Tecnologia de Alimentos (IATA), Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC), Patema (Valencia), Spain. "Consumers who were interested in the health benefits of ginseng rated our product quite highly."

Because older people frequently have trouble digesting milk products, the researchers developed a low-lactose formula. American ginseng was added, and then the milk was sterilized by ultra-high temperature processing (UHT), which prolongs shelf life. Analysis found that sufficient levels of ginseng remained in the milk after treatment to improve cognitive function as reported in the literature.

To reduce the bitter taste of American ginseng, the investigators developed samples with vanilla extract and sucralose, a zero-calorie artificial sweetener. In a preliminary study, 10 tasters with a good ability to discriminate between flavors compared low lactose UHT milk without any additives (the control) to low lactose milk with ginseng extract, vanilla aroma, and sucralose added before UHT treatment. They developed a list of 10 attributes that described the sample: color, sweet odor, milk flavor, vanilla flavor, metallic/root flavor, sweetness, bitterness, aftertaste, astringency, and viscosity. They then rated the intensity of each attribute for five samples; the control; the control with ginseng extract, vanilla aroma, and sucralose added; the control with ginseng extract added; the control with vanilla and ginseng extract; and the low lactose milk with ginseng extract; vanilla aroma; and sucralose added before UHT treatment.

In a second study, 100 participants were asked, on a scale of one to five, how willing they would be to consume a "highly digestible semi-skimmed milk," and a "highly digestible semi-skimmed milk enriched with ginseng extract that would improve cognitive function." Then, they tasted and rated, on a scale of one to nine, the overall acceptability of the control milk and the low lactose milk with ginseng extract, vanilla aroma, and sucralose added before UHT treatment.

Both the presence of ginseng and the thermal treatment affected some sensory properties of the milk. The addition of ginseng significantly increased the perceived light brown color in the flavored and unflavored samples, and was highest in the reduced-lactose milk with ingredients added before the UHT treatment. The sweet odor was more intense in flavored samples, but decreased slightly in the samples of milk with ingredients added before UHT treatment. Bitterness was clearly perceived in the samples containing ginseng additives, but was lower in flavored samples, indicating that the vanilla aroma and sucralose masked, to some extent, the bitter taste caused by ginseng extract.

Consumer responses varied greatly, depending on interest in the product. 78% indicated that they would be likely to consume the highly digestible milk, and after tasting the product, 87% of them indicated they would buy the sample. 47% indicated they were not interested in milk enriched with ginseng, and after tasting, they gave it a low acceptability rating. However, for the 32% of consumers who did express an interest in the product, 75% declared they would buy it.

"Drinking 150 to 300 mL of this ginseng-enriched milk would provide the amount indicated to be effective for improving cognitive functions. Combined with the low levels of lactose, this makes the drink an appropriate functional beverage for the elderly," says Dr. Fiszman. "Among consumers more likely to consume ginseng products, the newly developed milk was well accepted. The addition of more congruent flavors such as chocolate, citrus, or coffee, could be more effective in masking non-milk-related sensory attributes, Other alternatives could be investigated."

Commenting on the studies, Susan Duncan, PhD, professor, Department of Food Science & Technology, Virginia Tech, noted, "With the combination of intrinsic health benefits in milk and these additional ingredients, milk becomes an easy way to deliver valuable functional ingredients and the functional benefits of milk components. Diversifying the product line for milk and dairy products has a number of benefits, including market and consumer visibility and perception."
