What inspired you to start your own business?

Equilateral was founded after the four us had been through government employment schemes (e.g. Future Jobs Fund) but subsequently still found it difficult to find anything more than occasional or part-time work in our fields. We found that we were becoming reliant on other people sourcing projects that we could work on, so we decided to create our own. The inspiration really came when we realised that we could pool our expertise and create something we all really care about. Further to that is the drive each of us has to do something good with our careers, helping others and ourselves. We have no prior business experience, but we all know what we want to achieve and enjoy learning as we get there.

How did you begin your business venture? What help did you receive?

The idea to bring a group together for a new venture was discussed many times over a few months. There came a day when we were all together and finally decided that we were going to make a go of it and by the end of the month we were incorporated. We have had help from a number of sources. A mentor who has helped get the company articles together and meets with us periodically to objectively assess where we are both personally and professionally. We have had several meetings with a mentor from the Chamber of Commerce to help us with our business plan, and of course we have met several times with Business Start-Up at Leeds Met. All of this advice has helped Equilateral grow much quicker than we could have done without.

What are your top tips for running your own business?

?It is still early days for us and we are constantly learning but what immediately comes to mind is the following: Talk to people. Business advisors, potential partners, potential clients will all have something to say and could help you focus your company in the direction it needs to go.

Always be learning and developing your ideas. In our work especially, we have found that it is important to stay ahead of trends as much as we can and develop our business to meet the demand.

Lastly, give it a go. Quite self-explanatory.

?If you could have done things differently, what would you have changed?

?Not much, there are things that could have been done differently, but those things have been an important part of the learning process for us.

?What has been your biggest challenge?

?No start-up capital has been difficult. We mainly provide services that can be carried out in community facilities but, even so, getting the initial money together for bits and pieces has been a challenge.

?What has been your biggest mistake?

?Wanting to set off with the creative and fun elements from the get go. It?s maybe not so much of a mistake, but we did shy away from getting the fundamental business aspects in place early on. We have of course covered this now, but it can mean a day of paperwork here and there which can get in the way of other work now we are trading.

?What do you see as your greatest achievement?

?To date our biggest achievement has been receiving acknowledgement that what we are trying to do is a good thing and that we are making good progress with it. Of course that has been made no clearer than winning the Business Concept Competition, a boost that has really helped push us forward.

?What advice would you give to students thinking of starting their own business?

?Seek advice. There are a lot of places you can go and talk to someone with years of experience, from concept of your idea right through to trading and beyond. Even if I had a background in business I would have still accessed as much advice as I could ? even so much as just a nod that you are on the right track.

?Also, checking back to our ?biggest mistake?, I would say get the groundwork in place for the business early. It seems obvious but it is easy to overlook the simple tasks that can give you a steady base for your business, whatever sector you are in.

One of the challenges with alternative investments is that they are often not in the main flow of digitally controlled investments. Stocks on the NYSE or DOW, S&P500, or NASDAQ can all be sold almost instantly, and dividends ? if being paid ? can be routed to us through the complex stock market networks.

Alternative investments can be a challenge in the dividend and cash flow segment of investing. Gold, silver, platinum or diamonds ? all stellar alternative investments, pay no dividends and do not provide cash flow. They simply maintain our wealth with a minimum of fuss. 3 Ways to Create Cash Flow from Alternative Investments for Retirement or a Second Income

1. Gold and silver, if sufficient quantities are held, can be used for backing options or futures. We can sell either Call or Put options for our silver or gold ? under the direction of trusted and skillful commodities broker ? to generate cash flow fairly regularly. There is risk of being taken to the cleaners somewhat if you play with futures, but much less so on options. 2. Lease farmland for grazing or for farming. This allows land that could be producing, to go into cultivation with monthly payments flowing from the particular use. Cattle grazing is low paying, while corn, soy beans, and high value crops can offer significant payments. When our food prices increase, the payments received for subleasing out farmland can become significant all the while enjoying the price increase in the value of the land.
3. Commodity trusts such as mining trusts, or energy trusts for profit and royalty payments. While natural gas trusts from Canada have somewhat gone bust, oil trusts, and mining companies are beginning to pay significant dividends and growing them. Precious metals have taken a downturn now, but the average cost of metals out of the ground is still well below the current prices to mine for several large operators and a few smaller ones. These companies realize they need to pay dividends to capture the investing dollars of bigger funds, as well as the retirement segment of the population. Freeport McMoran (FCX) and BHP Billiton (BHP) both yield 1.5% while offering potentially significant capital growth. The oil trusts can pay more than 5% so they would be the first place to look.

Alternative investments provide a balance to the overall stock market. With the upward momentum in place for a solid performance of all the major indices, prudence and financial survival, suggests that balancing our portfolio with cash flowing stocks will provide ballast.

I never walk past a penny. If I see one lying on the ground, I bend down and pick it up? without even a hint of embarrassment. What good is it to say, ?Hey, I found a penny today? if you don?t pick it up and put it in your pocket?

I talk to lots of people who say things like, ?Wow, I?ve made 15% on XYZ stock.? But what they mean is, ?XYZ stock is up 15% higher than my purchase price.? Those are two drastically different statements? just like saying you found a penny is drastically different than picking that penny up and putting it in your pocket. Unfortunately, when I follow up with many of those same investors, they usually say something like, ?Oh, yah? it dipped and I didn?t actually cash it out.?

We have a saying around Invest in the Markets? ?It?s not a profit until you put it in your pocket!? Wise investors learn to take their profits and put them in their pockets. Simply watching stocks you?ve purchased go up in value? and then drop back down to your purchase point is pointless? like finding a penny and not picking it up and putting it in your pocket. Worse yet are those that watch their stocks go up in value and then drop below their purchase point. That?s more like finding a penny, taking a penny from your own pocket, and throwing it down beside the one you just found. Ludicrous isn?t it!

Quite simply, you?ll never get ahead if you don?t learn to pick up the profits? even the little ones? and put them in your pockets.

Penny Profits

Two weeks ago, when the indices dropped approximately 3% in the first two days, some of our stop loss orders triggered? and we took some profits and put them in our pockets.?While the markets dropped a little, some stocks were taking some huge dips in value. Take, for example, Agrium? a stock purchased way back on December 21, 2011? in the first two trading days this week, dropped approximately 5.5%. Having already sold 1/2 of our position several weeks ago at a profit, our 2nd stop loss order triggered and we put a total profit of 15.5% in our pockets.

A street called Syria divides tense Lebanese city

TRIPOLI, Lebanon (Reuters) - Two rival communities are preparing for war in Lebanon's northern coastal city of Tripoli and the frontline in their conflict is a street called Syria.

In the Sunni Muslim district of Bab Tebbaneh, Syrian rebel flags flutter from buildings, declarations of support for the one-year uprising against Bashar al-Assad.

The neighboring Jebel Mohsen area is home to Tripoli's defiant Alawite minority - from the same sect as Assad - who display their loyalty with pictures of the Syrian president.

Bullet holes scar buildings in both districts, reminders of conflict which date back nearly four decades and which flared again last month in street battles between fighters firing automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenades.

Two people were killed in that confrontation before the army was deployed to restore calm, reinforcing fears that the turmoil in Syria, which has already polarized Lebanese politicians and religious communities, may spark wider violence in the country.

Along Syria street, the dividing line between the Sunnis of Bab Tebbaneh and Alawites of Jebel Mohsen, banners supporting Assad flap alongside posters demanding his downfall.

On Fridays, when frictions often rise after Muslim prayers, soldiers deploy in force in the street to prevent further clashes. Armored personnel carriers are stationed in the area throughout the week.

"When the army leaves, people will kill each other ... It will be war," said a Sunni Muslim fighter from Bab Tebbaneh who gave his name as Abdullah.

LEBANON WAR "ISN'T OVER"

Tensions between Jebel Mohsen and Bab Tebbaneh date back to the early years of Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war, when Assad's father Hafez al-Assad sent troops into Lebanon, a military presence which was to last until 2005.

Alawites in Tripoli sided with the Syrian forces, while the city's Sunni Muslims backed the Palestinian militants fighting Assad's troops.

"The (civil) war ended but it is not over here," said Waleed, a Sunni Muslim fighter and community leader. "The people of Bab Tebbaneh suffered the most from the Syria regime."

"At least 86 people from here are still missing since the 1980s. They disappeared because of the Syrian regime and we don't know if they are dead or in prison."

"Now the wounds have reopened," he added, his message reinforced by fresh pictures of residents, missing for 30 years, pasted on the walls of Bab Tebbaneh against a background of rebel Syrian flags.

Zakaria al-Masri, imam of a mosque in the Qebba district where anti-Assad protests take place most Fridays, said people had a duty to support the overwhelmingly Sunni Muslim uprising in Syria after a year of unrest in which the United Nations says 8,000 people have died.

"Syrian people are facing injustice. It is important to stand by those facing injustice," he said at a demonstration earlier this month where people waved rebel Syrian flags and children painted anti-Assad slogans including "Freedom" and "Leave" on their foreheads.

Alawites in Jebel Mohsen, a hillside district overlooking the Mediterranean city, counter that the hostility to Assad has come from an increasingly hardline current of Sunni Islam which they say is taking hold in their city. They say they are well armed and ready for a showdown.

"We have noticed how extremism is spreading and nobody is criticizing it," said one man at a cafe in a poor district of Jebel Mohsen. He said some moderate Sunni sheikhs in Tripoli had been replaced by more conservative clerics, adding he saw more men with long beards and short dishdasha robes - signs of extreme religious piety - some of whom did not speak Arabic.

"We are a minority. Nothing will protect us but our weapons," said another man, who said that any conflict in Tripoli would spread to the capital Beirut and the Bekaa Valley.

"We have plenty of weapons and we are buying - heavy and light weapons, all is here," he said.

GUNS IN EVERY HOUSE

Weapons are a constant feature of conversation in the tinder-box city, and are rarely out of sight.

Speaking to a reporter in his home, Waleed proudly held his M-16 assault rifle, while his son showed off a Kalashnikov, saying they were stocking up on arms for the war they expect will erupt in Tripoli.

"We are buying guns to defend ourselves. Each house has guns depending on the number of men in the house," said the 52-year-old father of three, who says his own father was killed by Syrian forces.

His two sons and daughter are all trained to use a gun.

"Ten-year-old boys can use guns here. All men teach their sons how to use weapons. Even our women, we teach them".

"I know people who sold their televisions and gold just to buy weapons," he said. "When we are living in a security vacuum it is only natural that we protect ourselves".

A Tripoli resident called Munir said the bloodshed in Syria, where Assad's forces bombarded the rebel Homs neighborhood of Baba Amro into submission last month, had brought back Lebanese memories of their own civil war.

"What is happening in Syria has repercussions here. When a son of Bab Tebbaneh sees what happens in Syria he is reminded of what happened in the 1980s," he said, speaking at a cafe near the Sunni Muslim district.

"People lived through the same shelling and same massacres."

SPARK FOR CONFLICT

Although both sides say they are ready for a fight, no one will predict when the spark for a conflict might be struck.

"Definitely there will be a battle here but the question is for what purpose," said Waleed, who estimated the Alawites had about 1,000 to 2,000 fighters, while the Sunnis had 5,000. "Everyone is waiting for the right moment."

Most political leaders in Lebanon, from Sunni Muslim Prime Minister Najib Mikati to Shi'ite Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, have sought to prevent the Syrian crisis from spilling over into its smaller neighbor.

But the uprising has laid bare the country's divisions, with Nasrallah backing Assad and others, including Druze leader Walid Jumblatt and former Sunni prime minister Saad al-Hariri stepping up their condemnation of Assad's crackdown.

"Bab Tebbaneh and Jebel Mohsen are the weakest link in the country, but to ignite it requires a decision," Waleed said.

One Alawite resident, referring to the high levels of deprivation in Tripoli, said it was no accident that poverty was so widespread in the port city.

"We are left here as poor people so that when they need fuel for any war they can use us," he said, standing near two mosques, one Sunni and another Alawite, both pockmarked with bullet holes.

Another supporter of the Syrian leader, sitting in a car playing songs praising Assad, said Alawites were brought up to fight "to the end".

"When a child is born we do not bring him gold or sweets. We bring him a gun. This is his gift because he will be a fighter."

He smiled, and added: "Let them try to fight us".

Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe Talk 'Big Easy Express' Documentary

'It's like the biggest party you've ever been to,' Old Crow Medicine Show's Ketch Secor says of the film, which captures the 2011 Railroad Revival Tour.

Last year, Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show joined forces for the Railroad Revival Tour, a trek that took them through the American Southwest on a journey that was nearly as long as the names of the band names involved.

Director Emmett Malloy rode along with them, capturing each show and every magical moment aboard the rails ... and now, he's brought it all together in a brand-new documentary, "Big Easy Express," which premiered during the South by Southwest Music Fest in Austin, Texas. And at the premiere, MTV News caught up with three of the stars — Mumford's Ben Lovett, Edward Sharpe and Old Crow's Ketch Secor — to talk about making the film, which, from the sound of things, wasn't really much work at all.

"We weren't trying to make some 'great film' or anything. It didn't feel like that, we were just enjoying this experience that was laid out, and doing gigs and traveling in a bizarre way between the two," Lovett said. "And the great thing about Emmett, and this documentary, was that it didn't invade any of that, it didn't feel forced or staged. So, no, we weren't scrubbing up on our documentary history beforehand."

"It was like the biggest party you've ever been to," Secor laughed. "It lasted for a week, and you just couldn't afford to throw another one afterwards."

Though you get the feeling everyone involved would've liked to try, because just hearing the three reminisce on the tour, you can tell that it was one they'll remember for a long time. Not just for the musical moments, but for everything that happened between the shows too.

"It was about the joy of music, the joy of camaraderie," Secor said. "We're each, individually, quite different bands, we don't play the same music, we come from different places — England, Los Angeles, Nashville — but we all came together and just played ... played our hearts out. It was really amazing."

"It came at quite an interesting time, we've all gone on to be making records pretty soon after the tour," Lovett said. "So, I think it's impossible to deny the influence both of the spirit and the music that we had on that trip ... something happened."

And to that end, even though there's still no theatrical premiere for "Big Easy Express" (a publicist told MTV News it'll hit theaters nationally later this year), all three bands are beginning to make plans for a sequel ... to the tour, at least.

"I think twinkling in the back of everyone's mind is maybe doing something again," Sharpe said. "We've talked about weird ways to top that or have a different experience ... a zeppelin or a riverboat ... I think a zeppelin's more realistic."
